Position Summary:

Responsible for performing quality checks on finished products prior to shipping, manufacturing and product lines. Develop internal specifications for finished products, raw materials, and packaging components.

  

Essential Functions:

  • General knowledge of laboratory and chemical principles, terminology, material, Genera knowledge of laboratory and chemical principles, terminology, material, equipment, procedures, and techniques.
  • General knowledge of various fields of chemistry such as organic and inorganic. 
  • General knowledge of various laboratory instrument testing procedures such as spectroscopic, titrametric, or microscopic.
  • General knowledge of chromatographic separation techniques.
  • General knowledge of the operation and maintenance of various laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • General knowledge of the techniques required for laboratory safety and the proper handling of hazardous materials.
  • Skill in operating laboratory equipment and instruments, specifically, HPLC, UPLC, GC-MS, ICP-MS, FTIR, including preparation of laboratory samples, reagents, and solutions. 
  • Skill in the care and handling of laboratory samples. 
  • Skill in reading and following scientific laboratory methods and procedures.
  • Skill in calibrating and maintaining standard laboratory equipment. 
  • Skill in interpreting test results. 
  • Skill in preparing written reports that contain analysis of laboratory test results.
  • Skill in determining appropriate test equipment or instruments to be used. 
  • Ability to learn new complex laboratory procedures. 
  • Ability to perform highly repetitive tasks while maintaining accuracy and speed.
  • Ability to provide direction and leadership to students and other employees.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize own work and work of others. 
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to gather and exchange information. 
  • Ability to work with flammable, corrosive, reactive, toxic, radioactive, or irritating substances on a regular basis.
  • May assist packaging lines during high workflow periods.
  • Assist other chemists/technicians preparing solutions required for analytical instrumentation.
  • Work with Master Planner and Inventory Manager on all rejected products and labels. Coordinate any return / reorder. 
  • Work with all departments to coordinate workflow. 
  • Maintain open communication with Purchasing, Sales, and all other Departments.
  • Work with Receiving Department to expedite materials based on production requirements 


Requirements

  

Physical Requirements:

  • Vision, hearing and speaking to meet performance standards.
  • May be required to wear a respirator.
  • Manufacturing environment.
  • Able to lift to 35 lbs.

Work Environment:

  • May require overtime during peak periods or as business needs dictate.
  • Requires compliance with all departments and company Good Manufacturing Practices and Standard Operation Procedures.
  • Requires ability to work in an environment that contains high temperatures, fumes, dust, odors, noise, chemicals, temperature variations, and varying levels of ventilation.
  • Require team-orientation, common sense and good judgment, professional behavior, effective communication (oral and written), and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications:

  • One year of experience independently performing analytical chemistry procedures and a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, such as Chemistry, Biology, Food Chemistry, etc.

OR

  • Four years of experience working in a fast-paced production environment and some knowledge in Biological Sciences, such as Chemistry, Biology, Food Chemistry etc. 
  • Familiarity with State of Oregon Food Handling regulations.
  • Familiarity with laboratory analytical equipment.
  • Working understanding of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).
  • Possess effective communication skills with both technical and non-technical personnel within team management environment. 
  • Ability to negotiate with outside vendors.
  • Experience with personal computers (spreadsheet, Word, E-mail) and other PC or server applications. 
  • Requires ability to take and follow directions, time management skills, organizational development, and improvement.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills required to perform the essential job functions listed on this job description.
