This position is responsible for supporting patrol operations with on-scene traffic management, parking enforcement, VIN verifications, and other administrative duties.

Position Duties

  • Completes vehicle identification number (VIN) checks.
  • Performs vehicle equipment inspections.
  • Processes fingerprints; takes photographs; performs urinalysis.
  • Enforces parking codes, issues citations.
  • Provides traffic control at a variety of incidents and events.
  • Assists stranded motorists.
  • Serves subpoenas.
  • Completes required documentation and reports.
  • Provides station tours.
  • Performs related duties.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of city parking codes.
  • Knowledge of general office, communications, and records management procedures.
  • Knowledge of traffic control principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of the city’s geography.
  • Knowledge of fingerprinting equipment, tools, and procedures.
  • Skill in the use of computers and other standard office equipment.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in writing clear, comprehensive, and legible reports.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Other Qualifications

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Police Captain assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related community service duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to relieve sworn police officers from duties that do not necessarily require a sworn officer. Successful performance helps ensure the efficient operation of the Police Department.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city personnel, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services to the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious of infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to a high school diploma or GED.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Wyoming for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
