The Prince George’s County Department of The Environment is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Cashier/Customer Service, (Community Development Aide I/II) grade A05/A07position, in the Animal Services Division.


About the Position

This is an entry/full performance level, clerical position that processes financial transactions for pet licenses, redemptions, citations, hobby permits and adoptions. The incumbent will assist the public at the front counter by answering questions about animals in the facility and the adoption process; may assist walking adopters through the facility to see available pets; and assist with facilitating interactions between potential adopters and pets. The incumbent will be receiving, recording and processing customer requests and complaints for the Animal Service Division. The position must possess and maintain strong customer service, telephone and computer skills. 

About the Agency

The Department of the Environment works for a healthy, beautiful and sustainable County through programs that provide clean water, flood control, recycling and waste management, litter prevention, sustainable animal management and pet adoption in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Some of our core services include providing clean water services (Stormwater Management Division); flooding prevention for buildings and structures (Sustainability Division and Stormwater Management Division); collecting, processing and diverting waste from the County-operated landfill, commercial facilities and householders (Resource Recovery Division); providing sustainability services to reduce greenhouse gas and emission (Sustainability Division); and facilitating pet adoptions, managing an animal holding facility, issuing pet licenses, investigating cruelty complaints and conducting humane outreach and education events (Animal Services Division).  

Position Duties

  • Processes all monies for transaction to include adoptions, redemptions, hobby permits, pet licenses and violation tickets accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Ensures all violations are entered into the computer system daily with complete accuracy.

  • Closes out cash drawer at the end of each workday.

  • Ensures when taking information notes are entered into the Chameleon system completely and correctly.

  • Assists customers as needed, by either entering notes into the Chameleon system or referring customers to an agency that can provide help if Animal Services cannot.

  • Files all violation tickets issued according to date of issuance.

  • Answers telephone in a polite and courteous manner.

  • Greets customers as they arrive in a professional and courteous manner at all times.

  • Always provides accurate information to customers and refers to supervisor in areas of uncertainty to ensure accurate information is provided.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade; residence in the geographic area of work assignment; demonstrated interest in civic or community affairs.

  • Successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings, where applicable.
  • Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
