Job Description

Title: School Nurse (K-12) 

Reports To: Director of Student Services

Employee Type: Full-Time, 10-month, Salary, Exempt

Summary
To provide assessment, screening, planning, intervention, evaluation, counseling, management and/or referrals concerning the health and medical care needs of students for the purpose of minimizing absences due to illness, maximizing educational opportunities, and creating a healthy school climate.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide assessment, screening, planning, intervention, evaluation, counseling, management and/or referrals concerning the health and medical care needs of students for the purpose of minimizing absences due to illness, maximizing educational opportunities, and creating a healthy school climate.
  • Administers medications per standing and individual orders.
  • Performs clerical duties in support of health care services: fills out student incident reports, prepares health records for new students and maintains a health record for each student, maintains effective health room schedule, preserves the confidentiality of health care records, and answers incoming telephone calls in a friendly, professional manner.  
  • Maintains the computerized daily record of treatments and activities.  Updates computer records of health problems and new medications. 
  • Compiles class trip lists for special needs and medications.
  • Works collaboratively with health care providers, students, parents, school staff, and community agencies to ensure access and continuity of care for students.
  • Collects information about the health development status of students for compliance with state immunization regulations and Board of Education policies.
  • Performs nursing assessment of students who are ill or injured, providing first aid, nursing care, intervention and referrals as needed.
  • May counsel students on health and hygiene, assist guidance counselors and Crisis Intervention Team as needed.
  • Maintains a clean healthcare environment.
  • Performs annual health screenings per state guidelines.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality pertaining to school and student information and records.

Qualifications: 

  • Registered professional nurse, designated as R.N., with current states license
  • Accurate record keeping, good clerical skills, including basic office computer
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Adheres to all applicable professional safety standards and practices in the nursing field and Occupational Safety and Health regulations
  • Knowledge of universal precautions when handling infectious waste
  • Completion of Healthcare provider CPR training courses required
  • Must successfully complete and maintain compliance with all federal and state background and criminal record check requirements


Safety Requirements:

  • Adheres to all applicable professional safety standards and practices in the nursing field, including requirements set forth in federal and state law, and Occupational Safety and Health regulations.
  • Implements Board Policy regarding Blood Borne Pathogens and other Board policies regarding the medical or health care of employees and students.

Travel Requirements:

  • Frequent travel between schools may be required.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:

  • Work in standard school building environment.
  • Exposure to body secretions, blood borne pathogens, medicine and medicinal supplies, illnesses and diseases.

  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time

  • Noise level in the work environment is usually mild to moderate depending on the specific site
  • Uses medical equipment to provide health care to students/staff, including, but not limited to, blood glucose monitor, stethoscopes, thermometers, sphygmomanometers.
