About the Department
Provides advanced professional nursing care which includes the delivery of primary health care, diagnosis and treatment of common medical conditions, minor surgery and invasive procedures, health education and counseling; and performs other related work as required.
This position is in the Family Planning Sexual Health Clinic. Experience providing sexual and reproductive health care is preferred but not required.
Northern Nevada Public Health is currently accepting applications for the intermittent hourly Advanced Practice Registered Nurse position. The intermittent hourly Advanced Practice Registered Nurse works on an as needed basis and with no guarantee of hours per week/month.
Intermittent Hourly positions are not Benefited positions.

Position Duties
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate of arts or bachelor's degree in nursing and sufficient advanced, specialized nursing training to qualify for State of Nevada certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
License or Certificate
- A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Nevada is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
- Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with the Nevada State Board of Nursing is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
- For positions within Northern Nevada Public Health: A Practitioner Dispensing Certification with the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy is required within three months of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
- For positions within Northern Nevada Public Health: An Active Prescribing - D license with the Nevada State Board of Nursing is required within three months of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
- For positions within the Washoe County Child Advocacy Center in the District Attorney’s office: Sixteen (16) hours of formal didactic training per National Children’s Alliance (NCA) requirements in the medical evaluation of child sexual abuse is required at the time of appointment. (Not applicable for this position.)
- For positions within the Washoe County Child Advocacy Center in the District Attorney’s office: Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE-P) certification per NCA requirements is required within three months of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification. SANE-P certification includes forty (40) hours of formal didactic training in the medical evaluation of child sexual abuse and completion of a competency based clinical preceptorship. (Not applicable for this position.)
The Ideal Candidate will have experience in Sexual and Reproductive Health.
Minimum Qualifications
Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. Effective January 1, 2025, the $39.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.
This is not a classified position and is not covered by a collective bargaining unit.
“Intermittent hourly employee” means a person who is not employed on a fixed schedule and works on an “on-call” basis. Please be advised that upon appointment an Intermittent Hourly employee cannot work a regularly scheduled work schedule and must work less than 1040 hours in any fiscal year. Intermittent Hourly employees are “at will” employees and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
Retired PERS (Public Employees’ Retirement System of Nevada) employees are responsible for contacting PERS to make sure that they do not go over the assigned PERS earnings limit for a fiscal year in order to retain retirement benefits. PERS phone number is 775-687-4200 to check for yearly updates.
Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.
