Position: Standardized Patient
Department: CU School of Osteopathic Medicine
Status: Part Time
Position Summary:
Standardized Patients (SP) are individuals assigned to act as patients in a mock provider-patient encounter, as part of clinical skills examinations (also known as OSCEs). SPs are utilized for students enrolled in CU health programs, including DO, PA, PT, Pharmacy, etc., and are trained to portray a specific case for which a student will do a brief medical interview and/or a focused examination. SPs will provide the students with constructive feedback regarding their performance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain a professional manner in all encounters while interacting with students, faculty, fellow SPs, staff, and university personnel.
- Maintain confidentiality of all information regarding student performance
- Portray case scripts/scenarios detailing specific emotions, behaviors, and disease signs/symptoms for presentation during simulated learning situations.
- Present all aspects of the case as required, including the history of the current problem, with appropriate affect/behavior and physical findings.
- Remain in character during the entire encounter with the student.
- Accurately record evaluation of student performance
- Provide students with constructive feedback regarding their performance on the exercise either in written or verbal format.
- Complete Peer Review on fellow SPs for quality assurance and communicate with the SP director or staff about inconsistencies.
- Complete video review and self-assessments
- Assist in other SP-related duties such as training, quality improvement, OSCE support, educational activities, or any other job-related duties as assigned.
- Receive ongoing feedback and modify behaviors accordingly.
- Keep the SP director updated on changes in availability.
- Be able to work flexible hours and be on an on-call basis.
- Must be available for Pre/Post-OSCE briefings.
Education:
- High School Diploma/GED
Experience:
- Previous SP experience or acting experience preferred but not required.
Other skills important to this position:
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (both oral and written)
- Bilingual preferred but not required.
- Improvisational skills when necessary
- Commitment to university and program values/mission
- Medical knowledge is preferred but not required.
Physical Demands:
- SPs must be able to: move all extremities without difficulty, step up and down from an exam table, and change from clothing to a gown.
- No invasive procedures will be performed.
Mental Demands: (complexity of duties, decision-making responsibilities, etc.)
- Ability to understand oral and written information and organize thoughts and ideas into effective forms of communication.
- Deliver scripted performances.
- Remember and record student performance evaluations.
