This job opening is for one Land Survey I, II or III depending on business need and applicant's qualifications and experience. Qualification and experience will determine the applicant's position and pay. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant’s work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.
Land Surveyor I – B18 | $45,521 - $71,055 yearly
Land Surveyor II – B19 | $48,244 - $76,028 yearly

Leads multiple Department survey parties or oversees contracted survey parties for the purpose of determining boundaries and topography of real property or oversees the compilation, update and maintenance of real property maps; provides analysis and technical assistance, support, coordination and advice for the development, implementation and maintenance of land surveying-related information technology/systems (ITS/IS) and applications to include global positioning and geographic information systems (GPS/GIS). Work requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Essential Duties:
Land Surveyor I and II
- Monitors survey parties and plans future jobs.
- Assists in development of budgets for survey related work.
- Uses a variety of surveying software and related hardware current with the state-of-practice.
- Trains and instructs other survey personnel.
- Provides survey technical support to project managers in the TP&D Section including Global Positioning System (GPS) design and/or construction surveying.
- Coordinates and prepares surveying consultant contracts and work authorizations.
- Provides guidance to surveying consultants and contracted survey parties, as needed, to achieve project goals, and oversees their operations.
- Monitors and reviews work performance and work products of contracted survey work in support of project development including review of parcel descriptions and ROW maps to ensure specification and accuracy requirements are met.
- Contributes to the identification and definition of parcels for use in transportation projects by using relevant elements of surveying, property description writing, mapping, law, research, measurement, analysis and computation.
- Provides technical assistance for land surveying-related information technology/systems and applications including Global Positioning and Geographic Information Systems (GPS and GIS).
- Originates, signs and seals property descriptions and oversees setting of monument property corners.
- Oversees the compilation, update and maintenance of real property maps or mapping as defined by the Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying.
- Serves as lead worker or project lead for survey related work including, but not limited to, planning and prioritization of survey work.
- Implements guidelines and policies to ensure consistent survey practice across the District.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Land Surveyor III
Includes all duties listed above in addition to the following:
- Develops guidelines, procedures, and policies for District surveying activities.
- Provides guidance for staff pursuing SIT and RPLS registration.
- Liaises with TxDOT’s Committee on Geomatics & Surveying (COGS) to stay current with state-wide surveying practices, and provides regular updates (as needed) to TP&D personnel.
- Provides technical guidance to District personnel for surveying related inquiries.
- Ensures review of survey work products meets accuracy and adherence to required specifications.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
Experience:
Land Surveyor I: 3 years Land Surveying experience.
Land Surveyor II: 4 years in Land Surveying experience.
Land Surveyor III: 5 years in Land Surveying expenience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- State of Texas as a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS)*
*Must be registered by the State of Texas as a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS). Land Surveyors registered in another state, but not currently registered in the State of Texas, must meet the registration requirements of the Rules and Regulations of the Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying, regulating the practice of land surveying. If application is filed after January 1, 2003, have earned a bachelor´s degree from an accredited institution of higher education that included at least 32 semester hours in a combination of courses acceptable to the board in: civil engineering; land surveying; mathematics; photogrammetry; forestry; land law; or the physical sciences.

Land Surveyor I and II
- Applicable surveying procedures/methods, standards and instruments.

- Use of surveying tools, equipment and instruments.
- Leading, assigning, reviewing and monitoring the work of others.

- The use of GPS equipment and software.
- The use of personal computers and applicable programs, applications and systems.
- Maintaining a safe working relationship.
- Communicate effectively.
Land Surveyor III
Includes all competencies listed above in addition to the following:
- Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long-term deadlines.
- Prioritizing and organizing work assignments of survey group.
- Instructing others in survey related topics/items
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
- Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
- Light work: Lift up to 40 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 20 lbs
- Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
- Standing-prolonged periods of time
- Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
