About the Department
The Town of East Hartford is seeking a reliable and compassionate Part-Time Bus Driver to support our Senior Center Transportation Program. This position is responsible for safely operating a Senior Center bus or van to transport senior citizens to and from the East Hartford Senior Center, meal sites, and scheduled activities. To provide customer services to riders as needed including assisting passengers on and off the bus and securing wheelchairs. The Driver is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control.

Position Duties

- Drive Senior Center Bus or other vehicles based on daily schedule of pickups; decide routes to take, receive calls for follow up pick-ups; assist riders into bus and into seat if necessary; secure wheelchair and client in bus; follow safe driving rules.
- Responsible for inspecting vehicle for safety prior to operation and daily report problems to vehicle mechanics and Supervisor; clean inside of bus as needed.
- Fuel vehicle at Public Works as needed.
- Drive seniors on special trips for entertainment purposes.
- The work hours will usually be Tuesday and Thursday evenings 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and Saturday 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. Hours are approximately four to six hours per day but may vary according to need and mutual agreement.
- Responsible for keeping track of ridership, mileage, fuel.
- Contact appropriate staff if there is an accident, injured rider, ill rider, or complaint from a rider.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of municipal senior transportation programs; some knowledge of State Statutes related to driving; knowledge of records management.
Ability to deal with distressed senior clients; ability to recognize and identify and solve problems; ability to maintain working relationships with all clients and staff.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS:
The following physical and mental standards are identified as necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities. However, reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Mobility: frequent sitting for long periods; occasional kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, walking, and standing; occasional reaching.
- Lifting material weighing up to 10 pounds; occasional lifting and carrying of equipment and other items up to 25 pounds.
- Visual Requirements: frequent use of vision sufficient to drive and do close-up work.
- Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking, in person and on the telephone.
- Emotional/Psychological Factors: frequent contact with others, including extensive public contact; frequent deadlines and time-limited assignments.
Other Qualifications
Must have a High School Diploma or GED and have over two (2) years of experience driving a CDL vehicle or related work experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and work experience.
Special Requirements:
Must have and maintain: Valid CDL with passenger and air brake endorsement. Must submit to CDL Drug testing.
