Are you a politics and news junkie who is plugged into the daily conversation about the current presidential administration?
Do you mainline the latest debates and sound bites on political news shows, social media and podcasts?
Can you keep up with every twist and turn of the current administration, whether it’s an unexpected bit of breaking news, or an outlandish tweet that drives the news cycle?
Are you able to see issues from multiple points of view, and explain with clarity competing sides of political arguments?
Can you write a headline that leaves readers needing more, and coworkers wishing they had thought of?
Are you able to work closely with less experienced writers, juggling your own writing while supervising and editing others?
And can you write tightly, with lightning speed and an engaging, authoritative voice?
NJ Advance Media is searching for an enthusiastic, self-starting, digitally savvy journalist to help us build on our already expansive reach in political trending content. The experienced writer/editor will supervise a team that seeks to spot hot political and news stories and post quickly, while also smartly turning that buried news nugget or podcast comment into an engaging post with a compelling and irresistible headline.
The candidate should have experience supervising others and editing trending news stories. While their primary function will be to write, they will also be asked to guide day to day coverage and strategize its evolution, bringing new and innovative ideas to the table to grow our audience.
And while the position will concentrate on politics, media and news (local and national), the ideal candidate will be versatile enough to write on pop culture, entertainment, sports and weather — or any topic that will create high-interest posts to reach new readers.
The base salary range for this position is $65,000 - $70,000 per year.
Our ideal candidate will have the following skills:
- Strong writing skills with a command of grammar and AP style
- Clever SEO skills that will adapt to moving goal posts
- The ability to perform and adapt under pressure
- Exceptional time management and organizational skills and the ability to work independently
- An interest in working with other reporters and editors in a collaborative atmosphere that seeks to make both the team and each individual on the team shine.
- Familiarity with Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Truth Social and other social media platforms
- A commitment to fairness, professionalism, ethics and diversity
You should apply if you have:
- A degree in journalism, English or communications, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Minimum 4 years of journalism experience with a proven ability in reporting and writing; with at least a year of experience supervising others
- A fluency in SEO, Google Trends and keywords;
- A passion for informing readers with an ability to expand the reach of stories and grow online audience;
- The ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize appropriately;
- A solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure;
- The poise and organization to handle multiple tasks at once at a fast-moving pace;
- A competitive nature and mindset
