JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: KINDERGARTEN ASSISTANT/PARAPROFESSIONAL
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Paraprofessional or Substitute License is required.
2. High school diploma or equivalent, some college preferred.
3. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all staff and the public.
4. Uses/operates computer or digitized equipment related to the position/job.
5. Demonstrates proficient use of the English language in written and oral forms.
6. Able to demonstrate patience and gain student cooperation.
7. Able to assist in the implementation of an instructional program and to participate in monitoring and ensuring appropriate student behavior to all students.
REPORTS TO: Principal and/or designee
SUPERVISES: Supervises students as assigned
POSITION SUMMARY: The Kindergarten Classroom Assistants assist students under the direction of a certified teacher in order to support the Kindergarten teacher in his/her
work and help maintain the Kindergarten environment through a warm supportive atmosphere.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Provide individual help and assistance to students as requested
2. Assist in providing individualized and/or small group instruction and supervision for all students.
3. Reinforce learning objectives to small groups of students or individuals.
4. Responsible for helping the teacher with class instruction; working with small groups of children to reinforce lessons, providing one-on-one instruction to students and supervising students in the classroom.
5. Assist with a variety of activities and instructional methods (songs, stories, media, structured games, art, outdoor activities etc) to motivate and stimulate children’s abilities
6. Collect and organize teaching materials for the classroom teacher as needed.
7. Assist the teacher in preparing the classroom for the opening of school and in storing materials and getting the classroom ready for closing of schooL
8. Help maintain order in the classroom; monitors students to keep them on task.
9. Assist the classroom teacher in creating an environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
10. Assist in monitoring and supervising students during field trips and special school events. 11. Escort children who need to leave the classroom for any reason
12. Helps maintain classroom supplies and helps children retrieve materials, clean up work spaces and gather belongings
13. Supervise outdoor recess periods, lunch periods and bus supervision before and after school as assigned and enforce expectations for student behavior.
14. Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
15. Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
PHYSICAL CONTEXT OF THE JOB: This job requires the following: spending a portion of each day outdoors on the playground in a variety of weather conditions; occasional lifting of weights up to 50 lbs.; significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling.
GENERAL COMMENTS: This job entails working with students in classroom and campus settings.
