As L.A.'s premier performing arts destination, The Music Center convenes artists, communities, and ideas with the goal of deepening the cultural lives of every resident in Los Angeles County. The $80 million non-profit performing arts organization has three divisions: TMC Arts, TMC Ops, and TMC Business Services. TMC Arts, The Music Center’s programming engine, provides year-round programming inside The Music Center’s four theatres, which include Walt Disney Concert Hall, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Ahmanson Theatre and Mark Taper Forum; on Jerry Moss Plaza; outside at Gloria Molina Grand Park, a 12-acre adjacent green space; and in schools and neighborhoods all over Los Angeles County. TMC Arts presents world-class dance with Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center, free and low-cost public concerts and events, as well as K–12 arts learning programs, workshops, performances, interactive experiences, and special events. TMC Ops manages the theatres, Jerry Moss Plaza and Gloria Molina Grand Park, which comprise $3 billion in county assets, on behalf of the County of Los Angeles. TMC Business Services includes Advancement, Human Resources, Finance, Tech Services, and Marketing and Communications. The Music Center is also home to four renowned resident companies—Center Theatre Group, Los Angeles Master Chorale, LA Opera and LA Phil.

 

Position Summary:

The Music Center seeks a Spotlight Feedback Specialist to join the Spotlight team. The Music Center’s Spotlight program is part of TMC Arts, the programming division of TMC. Spotlight emphasizes self-esteem, preparation, and perseverance, providing a supportive environment for high school students to develop the skills needed to pursue their dreams.   Over the past 30 years, 51,000 Southern California high school students have benefitted from world-class arts training, scholarships, and college and career guidance at no cost to them through Spotlight.

The Spotlight Performance Feedback Specialist works under the general direction of and reports to the Spotlight Director and is in close collaboration with the Spotlight Program Manager. This position supports the performing arts scholarship program. 

Each year, 1,300 – 1,600 high school students in Southern California participate in The Music Center’s Spotlight.  There are three rounds of competition.  At each round, panels of expert judges write feedback for the students, outlining their strengths and areas to improve. The Letter Writer's primary responsibilities center on providing written feedback to students, based on the judge's adjudication forms. There are seven categories in Spotlight: Acting, Ballet, Dance, Non-Classical Voice, Classical Voice, Contemporary Instrumental, and Classical Instrumental. Letters are written based on a weekly schedule prepared by the Spotlight Manager, depending on the category.  Feedback letters are written with great care and respect for young artists. Training is provided. 

Duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

Round 1 involves compiling judges' notes from an online platform and Excel workbooks and watching artists' videos.   Rounds 2 and 3 include reading and compiling judges' notes from written rating sheets. All rounds involve writing a detailed and highly personal paragraph from collected information in the assigned art form.  Feedback Writer will also employ their knowledge and expertise to provide additional support in the form of corrections and solutions. 

  • Deliver batches of paragraphs to Spotlight Manager based on a strict timeline. The timeline is spaced out between October and May, depending on the category.  

 

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum Ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in one of these art forms: Acting, Ballet, Dance, Classical Voice, Non-Classical Voice, Classical Instrumental, Jazz, Rock, Popular, Urban, Latin Instrumental.   
  • Proficient in technology and technology-based communications, skilled in computer use: Word, Excel, required.
  • Written skills in Romantic languages for Ballet, Classical Instrumental and Classical Voice. 

 

Desired Skills

  • Excellent writing and editing skills. 2 – 3 Samples to be provided. 
  • Strong ability to meet all deadlines with excellent follow-through.
