About the Department

Pierce Transit is an independent municipal organization, dedicated to fulfilling the mission of improving people's quality of life by providing safe, reliable, innovative, and useful transportation services that are locally based and regionally connected.

We are currently recruiting for reliable and conscientious Preventative Maintenance Service Technicians to join the Fleet Maintenance team. This critical Fleet position is fast-paced and dynamic, with no two shifts being the same. Our Preventative Maintenance Service Technicians need to have a strong work ethic, superior attention to detail, and high level of safety mindedness

A successful candidate for this job will be a self-starter who takes pride in their work, keeps safety at the forefront, and has a track record of outstanding customer service. Reliability and a solid work history will round out this candidate’s application.    
Applicants should have at least three (3) years of experience performing similar work and will be ready to take on the duties of the job to include:
  • Perform preventative maintenance, adjustments, inspections, servicing and minor repair of vehicles and light and heavy equipment at assigned shop facility.
  • Assist mechanics in performing mechanical repair work as directed.
  • May include work on gasoline powered, hybrid and electric vehicles
  • Be prepared for both indoor and outdoor work.
  • Take on the responsibility for safely performing all assigned work.
  • Use sound independent judgment to make decisions and take actions on assigned duties.
  • Work well with others.
  • Ensure that work standards meet and/or exceed expectations.
   
Shift differential: 
This job is eligible for shift differential pay per the ATU Collective Bargaining Agreement.:
  • 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. - One dollar and fifty cents ($1.50) per hour
  • 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. - Three dollars ($3.00) per hour

Employees are not covered under the Social Security System except for a 1.45% payment for Medicare.  
 
Pierce Transit provides an ORCA Card benefit for each employee and a family member. This benefit provides free access to service on Pierce Transit, Sound Transit, Community Transit, Everett Transit, King County Metro, Kitsap Transit, Seattle Monorail, Seattle Streetcar, King County Water Taxi and Kitsap Foot Ferry. 
  
PAID LEAVE:
Full-time Pierce Transit employees receive 11 paid holidays, 2 personal paid holidays, 6 days of major sick leave, 22 days of paid time off (PTO) per year, and the ability to earn up to 2 Wellness Days by participating in a qualifying wellness activity and the annual survey. PTO accrual rates increase per policy.

Position Duties

The following functions are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Perform routine maintenance such as checking oil levels, changing oil when needed, replacing filters and lubricating equipment.
  • Assist with the inspection of brake systems, steering mechanisms and wheel bearings.
  • Inspect vehicles for abnormal conditions or reports issues, such as excessive use of oil, water or transmission fluid. air leaks.
  • Install and/or service batteries, spark plugs, fan belts, shock absorbers and other parts as needed.
  • Check levels of motor oil, transmission, radiator, or other fluids. adding fluids as required.
  • Test and charge batteries.
  • Install vehicle parts or accessories, such as batteries, windshield wiper blades, fan belts, bulbs, or headlamps.
  • Inspect mechanical components of vehicles to identify problems.  
  • Adjust vehicle components according to specifications.  
  • Operate and observe equipment to demonstrate function or malfunction.  
  • Demonstrate reliable and consistent attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent AND 
  • Three (3) years' experience relating to the servicing of automotive or diesel equipment or graduation from a related vocational program. 
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old. 
Desired Qualifications:
  • Completion of a heavy-duty vehicle program at an accredited technical school or college.
License Requirements: 
  • Must possess a valid Washington State driver license at time of application, with maintenance thereafter. 
  • Must obtain a Class B Commercial License Permit (CLP) prior to hire and successfully obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with air brake and passenger endorsement within ninety (90) days of hire, with maintenance thereafter. 
  • Must maintain acceptable driving record throughout employment.
Special Requirements:
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check, driving abstract review, physical and drug screen
  • Must be willing to work any shift as assigned (weekends and/or swing or graveyard shift are likely).
  • NOTE:  
    • Applicants who meet minimum qualifications may be invited to participate in an assessment, which requires a passing score to advance in the process.

Knowledge of and skill in:

  • Mechanical parts of vehicles and equipment.
  • Automotive tools, materials, and servicing procedures.
  • Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies and inventory procedures.
  • Personal computers and software systems.
  • Established safety practices
Skill in and ability to:
  • Use hand tools, such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, or precision instruments, as well as power tools, such as pneumatic wrenches.
  • Understand and carry out both oral and written instructions.
  • Work as a team with other employees in a directed work team environment.
  • Prepare and maintain records.
  • Conceptualize the work required, through personal observation or a verbal description, and determine what is necessary to obtain quality results.
  • Perform computerized work order methods and procedures.
  • Pass a job-related examination.
  • Pass federally required drug and alcohol testing mandates.
  • Drive all job-related vehicles and maintain a valid WA State driver's license and CDL with endorsements as required.
  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
Additional Requirements:
  • Must be willing and able to work any day and any shift as assigned. Shifts are assigned by seniority.    
Important notes:
  • Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions and will require exposure to soaps and various cleaning agents
  • May be required to provide basic hand tools such as pliers and screwdrivers necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
