About the Department

Continuing Education instructional positions teach language acquisition skills to English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students, at multiple locations in Iredell county or online.

Position Duties

  • prepare and teach assigned classes and create course outlines and lesson plans
  • develop course syllabi and provide appropriate written information to students concerning course evaluation and criteria
  • facilitate student language acquisition through in-class, interactive activities; using appropriate technology
  • assess student learning and provide appropriate feedback
  • monitor and report student progress and maintain current class attendance rosters
  • maintain accessibility to students, faculty, and staff
  • identify and resolve barriers to student success and make appropriate referrals
  • carry out a program of self-evaluation to determine instructional effectiveness
  • identify and implement assessment measures in compliance with state and federal policy that achieve course, program, and College learning outcomes
  • maintain professionalism and up-to-date knowledge within teaching field
  • notify supervisor of any class changes or cancellations and post course change signs on classrooms
  • prepares and submits instructional records, reports, and grades established by institutional policy
  • abide by all rules, policies, procedures, and guidelines

  • assists in student recruitment and retention
  • participate in departmental and divisional orientation and training sessions
  • completes other duties and assignments as directed

Minimum Qualifications


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • critical thinking; including collection, evaluation and analysis of data as it relates to student assessment, curriculum development and program review
  • computer proficiency and a commitment to the use of technology in instruction
  • strong oral and written communication skills
  • ability to work with a diverse population
  • excellent collaborative teaching skills
  • valid North Carolina Driver’s License
  • demonstrate an understanding of, and commitment to the unique nature and role of the College as a learning-centered institution

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • proven knowledge of the subject and appropriate educational credential

Physical Effort: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to maintain a stationary position; move about the classroom, operate and position tools or controls; and frequently communicate with students, through speaking, hearing, seeing, and writing. The employee may occasionally move up to 15 pounds.


Scheduling: 

This is a part time position. Normal working hours are dependent on the demand and request for services, and may include day, evening or weekend hours.  


Travel: 

Local travel may be required, including between campus locations.
