About the Department

The Transportation Inspector in this position will serve at the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles. Performs full-performance level work conducting inspections to determine compliance with various state and federal laws and regulations. Work is performed according to prescribed procedures and involves direct contact with employers, public officials, civic and labor groups, and the general public. The employee must use independent judgement in the interpretation and adaptation of policies and guidelines. The employee may use precedents or work directions in the application to specific issues or problems. In this level, the employee must use technical policies and guidelines. Employee has ability to make day to day decisions in their position, but work is reviewed and signed off on by a senior level or manager position. Employee may train lower level inspectors. Involves considerable statewide travel and possible irregular work schedule. Performs other related duties as required.

Pay Grade 10

Position Duties

• Conducts routine, complex, and special inspections
• Trains and instructs new employees in the techniques and procedures used in performing inspections, handling investigations, surveys, or complaints
• Takes action indicated by results of inspections, tests, and investigations
• May check and evaluate the work and reports of subordinates in relation to the completion of specific assignments
• Makes recommendations concerning the proper application of laws, rules and regulations
• Completes and/or assists subordinates in the preparation of detailed inspection reports
• Maintains records pertaining to inspection schedules and results
• Checks for requirements prescribed by law, such as proper licensing, record keeping, security, safety, and sanitary conditions
• May inspect and monitor procedures to assure compliance to state and federal agreements and specifications
• Established rules, regulations, and procedures will be used to solve a variety of routine problem and answer a variety of standard questions.
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations of agency assigned
• Knowledge of proper inspection techniques and procedures
• Ability to interpret and follow detailed instructions, specifications, manuals, and other related guidelines
• Ability to instruct and supervise subordinates in inspection methods and procedures
• Ability to express ideas clearly, both orally and in writing
• Ability to prepare required forms, correspondence, and reports
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and the general public and to deal with controversial matters in a   tactful manner
• Licensure and/or certification pertinent to area of assignment may be required.

Other Qualifications

REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION 

  • High school diploma or the equivalent. 
 
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
  • Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in purchasing, law enforcement, investigation, safety inspection, transportation, highway construction or maintenance, industrial maintenance, or responsible public contact work. 
  • Substitution: Successful completion of coursework from a regionally accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience through an established formula.
