MMSD is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Monitoring Technician in the Water Quality Protection Division. Reporting to the Monitoring Supervisor, you will collect samples, field data, and other information to support MMSD's programs and initiatives. Programs and initiatives supported include: industrial waste pretreatment, flow monitoring, groundwater well monitoring, real-time water quality monitoring, conveyance system structure assessments, asset management support, hydrogen sulfide monitoring, landfill gas monitoring, and the capacity management operation and maintenance program (CMOM).
Position Duties
- Monitor significant industrial users with effluent limitations in relation to MMSD's pretreatment standards.
- Collect all required data and samples in a safe, organized, timely, and accurate manner in accordance with applicable standards.
- Properly install, calibrate, clean, and maintain permanent and portable sampling, flow monitoring, and water quality monitoring equipment.
- Provide confined space entry and confined space rescue support.
- Perform assessments of the conveyance system, investigate various discrepancies, and report findings to the conveyance system team.
- Commute to various river sites to compare data, exchange equipment, and collect groundwater data in correlation with the WPDES permit.
- Provide traffic support for MMSD personnel and affiliate contractors and ensure the safe and legal operation of the work van.
- Ensure MMSD vehicles are adequately stocked with necessary supplies to complete daily tasks.
- Train and cross-train new and current staff in all job-related duties and responsibilities.
- Complete special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate degree in environmental science or a related field.
- Two years of job-related experience (advanced education degrees will be considered in lieu of experience).
- Knowledge and skills in measurement conversions and flow calculations.
- Ability to use precision measuring instruments.
- Ability to read and interpret documents, such as technical specifications, drawings, and maps.
- Ability to operate a variety of small hand and power tools, small generators, and samplers/flow monitoring equipment.
- Ability to safely operate MMSD vehicles.
- Physical capabilities to perform job-related tasks, including ability to wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for confined space entry.
- Confined space entry/confined space rescue certification (provided by MMSD).
- First Aid and CPR certification (provided by MMSD).
- Valid driver's license and a good driving record at time of application, during the selection process, and throughout employment.

Physical Requirements:
- Work requires the regular exertion of up to 50 lbs. of force, and frequent exertion of over 100 lbs. of force.
- Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands, reaching with arms, and smelling. Work frequently requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, kneeling or crawling, and pushing or pulling. Work occasionally requires sitting and repetitive motions.
- Ability to access a confined space through a 20-inch diameter opening.
- Work has standard vision requirements. Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communication and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
- Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machinery, operating motor vehicles, and observing general surroundings and activities.
- Work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high/precarious places, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), and exposure to bloodborne pathogens (may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment). Work occasionally requires exposure to wet/humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration, and wearing a SCBA.
- Work is generally in a loud noise location (heavy traffic, large equipment, etc.).
