About the Department

The primary focus of this position is to provide supportive services to children, families, birth parents, foster parents and adoptive parents. Children may be in foster care, kinship placement, adoptive placements or residing in the home of their parents. The focus is to assure a permanent and suitable placement for children. This position will primarily assist higher level social workers in providing and arranging for services that have been identified in case plans. Worker will also provide supervision of court ordered visits, transportation to appointments and visitation.

Position Duties

Major activities involve assisting higher level social workers in implementation, provision of and or arrangement for services that have been identified in case plans. Worker will also provide supervision of court ordered visits and transportation to appointments and visitation. Worker may also carry small caseload for supportive services with supervision immediately available when a problem situation is encountered.

  • Supervise/Monitor visits with parents/caregivers. Observe verbal and non-verbal interactions/behaviors, critique parenting techniques and maintain written documentation of visits. Assist with interactions and parenting per guidance and instruction.
  • Provide Transportation for children and families to various appointments in the community and transport children to visit their families.
  • Provide services to families: family adjustment services, home visits to monitor progress and collateral contacts for social worker III’s.   Worker meets regularly with higher level social workers to provide and receive feedback about the clients for which the worker is assisting and rotate among case management teams. Worker may be called upon to assist clients with budgeting funds provided through Federal, State and local programs.   Worker may represent the agency in court matters as a witness for the cases in which the worker is involved.
  • Documentation: Completion of all required documentation will be performed as mandated and be kept current.
  • Community Liaison/ Consultation: Worker will maintain knowledge of community resources in order to identify unmet service needs and to participate in program development. Worker provides consultation to clients, other workers and community resources and citizens.
  • Court or Legal Responsibility: Worker may be required to gather, prepare, and present evidence in a supporting role to higher level social worker in a variety of proceedings as deemed appropriate by each case. Actions may include preparation and or testimony for review hearing, adjudication, termination of parental rights cases; etc. 
  • Worker will maintain confidentiality as required by law and ethics.
  • Other duties as assigned to include shelter duty if needed in times of disaster. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of directly related experience; or a bachelor’s degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related experience; or a bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
College transcript is required. 

Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required. Any restrictions on North Carolina driver's license must not prohibit the performance of the essential functions of the position.

Equivalent Training and Experience: BSW degrees are preferred. Other appropriate combinations of education and experience will be considered for trainee status. Directly related experience is defined as human services experience in the areas of case management, assessment and referral, supportive counseling, intervention, psycho-social therapy and treatment planning. 

Other Qualifications

Physical Requirements: Employee must be able to move within and outside the agency, climb stairs, and use office equipment on a frequent basis. Employee occasionally lifts small children, camera, suitcases, toys, car seats, etc. in performance of duties. Employee must travel to meetings within the county as well as workshops and meetings out of the county. Overnight stays are sometimes necessary.
