Description
Help Steer a People-First System That Actually Lives Its Values
Lorenz Clinic is not your typical healthcare employer. We’re a respected, clinician-led mental health practice with a fierce commitment to doing right by our clients and our people. With 140+ staff across multiple Minnesota locations, we deliver relational, systemic, developmentally informed care—while also training the next generation of psychotherapists through our nationally recognized graduate education programs.
But what makes us different isn’t just our clinical model. It’s how seriously we take infrastructure as stewardship. In a field where burnout and bureaucracy often erode quality, we’ve doubled down on human systems that hold people and enable excellence to compound. That means HR here isn’t about “compliance,” it’s about containment, clarity, and strategic presence.
This is a rare opportunity to lead HR in a people-centric clinic where your work will directly shape how clinicians thrive, managers lead, and our mission endures.
Why This Role Matters
Mental health care is emotionally expensive. Most HR leaders know the toll that unresolved conflict, poor role clarity, or inconsistent leadership can take on a team. In our setting, that toll is amplified. Our workforce is clinically gifted and emotionally attuned, and that’s both a superpower and a systems challenge.
You won’t just be managing forms and policies. You’ll be protecting the structure that protects the people, so they can protect our clients.
We’re looking for someone who:
- Sees HR as an anchor, not an afterthought
- Operates as a working leader, not a figurehead
- Can move from payroll troubleshooting to coaching a manager without missing a beat
- Brings judgment, maturity, and presence to a sensitive, mission-rich environment
- Wants to help rebuild trust in people leadership at a clinic that’s doing the real work
What You’ll Actually Do
This is a player-coach role with broad ownership and high impact. Your core domains include:
- Payroll + Benefits: Maintain integrity, educate staff, and manage vendor relationships
- Employee Relations: Contain sensitive issues, coach managers, and coordinate leaves
- Performance Systems: Oversee review cycles, track trends, enforce documentation
- Compliance & Risk: Own documentation, reporting, and org-wide HR compliance
- Hiring & Onboarding: Support topgrading, own logistical systems, build first impressions
- Offboarding & Transitions: Ensure exits are clean, humane, and documented
- Strategic HR Leadership: Bring systemic clarity, protect leadership capacity, and support operational elevation
- Cultural Stewardship: Help hold the line on our mission, values, and personnel standards
You’ll inherit a functioning structure from a long-tenured HRD and will be onboarded thoughtfully.
Requirements
You Might Be a Fit If You...
- Have led HR in a 50–250 person org, ideally in mental health, healthcare, human services, nonprofits, or education
- Have 5–8+ years of experience with end-to-end HR responsibility
- Hold a SHRM-CP (required) or SPHR/SHRM-SCP (preferred)
- Have Paylocity or similar HRIS fluency
- Have worked with limited cash, evolving org charts, and founders who are all-in
- Know how to build trust with clinicians, not just managers
- Can operate with high integrity in emotionally charged, confidential situations
- Are drawn to mission over ego, but don’t shy away from accountability
Why Lorenz Clinic?
- We don’t do “corporate HR.” You’ll never have to spin, water it down, or cover up dysfunction.
- You’ll be part of a leadership team that values you as a strategic partner, not a compliance cop.
- You’ll help shape one of Minnesota’s most respected mental health training institutes.
- You’ll actually matter. Not performatively. Not symbolically. Operationally and culturally.
Logistics & Compensation
- Status: Full-time, exempt
- Location: On-site only; no remote or hybrid option available, as we believe it’s not leadership unless it’s present and embodied
- Salary Range: $85,000–$125,000 DOE.
- Benefits: Medical, dental, vision, 401(k), PTO, CEU support, and more
How to Apply
Though not required, cover letters help us make for the best match for all-involved and speak volumes about professionalism, which is one of our core values. If you choose to write a cover letter, it would help us to understand some of the most difficult [deidentified] situations you’d had to manage through in your HR tenure.
