About the Department

The purpose of the class is to service gas utilities.  The class is responsible for installation and maintenance of gas appliances, meter repair, disconnecting and connecting service, safety inspections, and maintaining logs and records.  The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

Position Duties

  • Installs gas appliances for residential and commercial customers.
  • Connect gas service for residential and commercial customers.
  • Inspects gas lines, meters, and other components for safety; makes repairs as necessary and reports major malfunctions.
  • Install and maintain automated meter reading devices.
  • Respond to all reported gas leaks.
  • Maintains and repairs meters and associated components.
  • Performs required maintenance on regulator stations, odorizers, valves and other gas facilities.
  • Inspects and maintains cathodic protection systems.
  • Perform gas line locations when required.
  • Maintains log and records and prepares periodic and special reports.
  • Attends staff meetings to exchange information; attends in-service training and technical classes to improve technical skills.  
  • Performs routine office tasks, such as typing, filing, faxing, phoning, and copying.
  • Perform after hours and weekend on call duties.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or GED. Basic knowledge of appliance repairs, electrical work, plumbing or a closely related field preferred.  Previous work experience and training is helpful but not required.  
Must live within 20-mile radius of the city limits of Leesburg, or move within this 20-mile radius within first 4 (four) months of employment and for continued employment.
Must participate in on-call rotation. Must be available for call back for gas emergencies.

Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL permit within 6 months of employment. 

Must obtain Class A CDL within one year of employment.

Complete and maintain all required OQ certifications (continuing education) and all other all certifications as required by applicable federal, state and local regulations. 

Special skills or equipment certification may be required.

This position requires participation in Gas Department random drug testing program. In addition, is subject to Federal Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations.

  • Serves others such as customers, attends to their requests and exchanges information with them.
  • Handles or uses machines, tools, or equipment that require moderate instruction and experience such as earth moving equipment, specialized gas service equipment, test  equipment,  vehicles, specialized and general-purpose computers, and software programs such as word processing, spreadsheets or custom applications; may repair power tools and light equipment.
  • Performs skilled work involving rules/systems but solves problems almost constantly.
  • Performs addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and/or calculates ratios, rates and percent.
  • Reads technical instructions, procedures manuals, code books and charts to solve practical problems; composes routine and specialized reports, forms, and business letters; speaks compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.
  • Performs manual and technical tasks requiring a wide range of procedures and requiring intensive understanding of a restricted field or complete familiarity with the functions of a unit  or small division of an operating agency; requires normal attention with short periods of  concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.
