The range listed reflects the entire range and typical placement is entry to mid range.

Pay Range: $19.00 - $22.25/hour

Position Purpose

Assist Utility Technicians with the general maintenance of the water transmission and distribution system including, but not limited to, valve rotation, service line maintenance, fire hydrant cleaning, painting and maintenance, water main flushing, utility locations, air-vacuum valve maintenance, water meter and transponder installation, meter pit repairs, and irrigation ditch maintenance. Typical hours are 7:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday year round--some schedule variations may be considered within these parameters.

This position is health plan eligible.

Essential Job Functions

Field Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs labor on programs including but not limited to main failure repairs, valve rotation, service line maintenance, overlay valve box adjustments/repairs, fire hydrant cleaning, painting and maintenance, water main flushing, utility locations, air-vacuum valve maintenance, water meter and transponder installation, meter pit repairs, irrigation ditch maintenance, all excavation repairs and maintenance of the water system.

  • Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Basic written and verbal communication skills.

  • Basic knowledge in effectively communicating and interacting with all levels of personnel within the city in a positive and cooperative manner.

  • Basic understanding of adapting and changing focus in order to meet customer needs.

Water Transmission and Distribution Maintenance:

  • Responds to citizen/customer concerns and forwards to the appropriate crew member.
  • Operates assigned equipment and hand tools, including but not limited to tandem axle dump truck with trailer, small portable vacuum unit, forklift, jackhammer, metal detector, paint sprayer, air tester, air blower, and snow removal equipment.  Occasional use of backhoe and front-end loader.

  • Performs shop and yard maintenance.

  • Responds to emergency situations as needed, whether in the regular workday or after hours.

  • Carries a contact beeper or cell phone on a rotation basis for response to after-hour emergency calls to assist customers as assigned by water system operations manager.

  • Basic knowledge of public works and of water transmission and distribution system construction, operation and maintenance.

  • Basic knowledge in the use of equipment used to maintain water distribution systems.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.

License & Certification
A valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required.

Education Degree
High School/GED

Work Experience Related
Previous water operations experience helpful.

Other Qualifications
Must be at least eighteen years of age.

Physical Demands
Strenuous to extreme physical effort that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50+ pounds) and may also use heavy tools or require strenuous application in awkward positions.

Hazards
Marginal to moderate exposure to conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury.

Regular exposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements.

The City of Arvada does not offer benefits to temporary and/or seasonal employees.  Temporary, Variable Hour and Health Plan Eligible employees will earn 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum cap of 48 hours.
