H&S Manager

This position will provide Health & Safety leadership to company with regard to all aspects of Health, Safety.  The position provides direct oversight, leadership and direction to a region of many sites.  Through execution of responsibilities, this individual guides Health & Safety performance and culture to a best in class level to eliminate incidents and accidents. 

Responsibilities:

  • Support the vision and strategy of the HSE department.  Reports to Director - HSE
  • Guide, direct, coach, and assist site and shop personnel, and Operational leaders (front line leaders, Supervisors, Managers, etc.)
  • Provide direct H&S oversight and audit of assigned sites and projects, shops, yards, equipment, vehicles, etc. 
  • Support company effort of visible leadership by visiting/auditing job sites and interacting with employees and site/customer leadership. 
  • Actively manages incidents/injuries from start to finish utilizing company systems and medical resources in place.
  • Build and maintain relationships with medical clinics and resources company-wide.
  • Help oversee and support all company HSE programs, policies, campaigns, and the regulatory compliance process.  This is done through alignment with Operations.
  • Lead efforts to support development and implementation of new HSE programs, campaigns, implementation plans, etc.
  • Represent company with key strategic relationships, including but not limited to:
    1. Area Safety Councils, Local Business Roundtables, WJTA, medical providers, third party partners, customers etc.
  • Manage the HSE on-boarding LMS process and work with applicable departments to ensure all training and on-boarding is complete/compliant
  • Help to manage compliance within company platform(s) which harness incident investigations, audit, observations etc.
  • Help lead and coordinate company-wide safety leadership training efforts across all locations
  • Support hiring process through interviewing and researching potential H&S professional candidates. Support the development of site company personnel
  • Lead and oversee compliance efforts associated with regulatory medical compliance items (e.g., audiograms, respiratory fit test, physicals, etc.)
  • Assist with leading efforts associated with pre-job planning and establishing HSE Management system at new job locations
  • Builds working relationships with customer representatives, project staff, and subcontractor representatives
  • Leads and creates accurate safety reports and accident investigation documents
  • Presents investigations, reports and other HSE related presentations to customers and senior leadership as needed and at scheduled meetings.
  • Leads and participates in safety training and subcontractor development as needed
  • Leads and participates in safety meetings at job locations and division office(s)
  • Represents company in a positive and professional manner with the customer and subcontractors
  • Creates and facilitates safety training and orientations aligned with project specifics/schedules and ensure compliance with training requirements
  • Establishes aggressive coverage strategy for job locations and participates in HSE activities as a visible field leader
  • Actively conducts audits and observations at job site locations in alignment with operations
  • Produces HSE communications to help deliver critical messages on initiatives, campaigns, and/or leading/lagging data
  • Analyzes leading/lagging data and produces reports/action plans to work proactively at job locations within division
  • Ensures compliance with the company’s current safety manual, policies, and expectations at all division locations
  • Engages in cross-site activities including audit opportunities with Operations

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in HSE is preferred. Required Associates degree in HSE or certification as one or more of the following: BCSP OHST, BCSP CHST, NCCER Construction Safety Technician, NCCER Safety Technology, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in the management of safety and health processes
  • A minimum of 3 years of management level experience  
  • Industrial experience preferred
  • Demonstrated collegiate-level computer skills, communication skills, and technical writing, with an aptitude for mastering the additional skills required of the position
  • Willingness to travel by vehicle or plane to job sites and other branches approximately 30 - 40 percent.
