About our Department:
The City of Huntsville Engineering Department’s mission is to provide well-organized and cost-effective municipal engineering services to the citizens of Huntsville, the business community, as well as other Departments of the City. The Engineering Department provides design services, surveying, and contract administration for Capital Infrastructure Improvement Projects. Our department concentrates our efforts on designing/planning, advising, administering, and overseeing Capital Improvement Projects, subdivision developments, and floodplain management with the emphasis on enhancing the economic base, protecting the public health, safety and welfare of our neighborhoods, while improving the quality of life for the residents of Huntsville.
Engineering Technician Position Overview:
This is advanced journey level public works inspection work. Work involves overseeing all aspects of construction, preparing monthly project estimates, providing directions to supporting staff, reviewing plans and specifications for compliance and managing assigned projects to ensure that work performed by contractors meets all quality, standards and specifications required by the City. Work also involves conducting inspections of highways, streets, bridges and other public works constructions projects in the course of construction to determine whether plans, quality of work and materials conform with existing code requirements.
Qualifications and Necessary Special Requirements:
High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency and experience in public works construction or inspection work, or any combination of education, training, and experience.
Certification as a federal and state Bridge Inspector required within five years of hire or promotion date.
Valid driver's license
Completion of Safety Inspection of in-Service Bridges Course required within two years of hire or promotion date.
ALDOT Bridge Inspection Refresher Course required each year.
