Position Summary:
The Director of Accounting is a senior financial leader who serves as both a hands-on expert in nonprofit accounting and a strategic partner to organizational leadership. In addition to overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger management, grants accounting, payroll, audit preparation, financial reporting, and compliance, this role plays a critical part in shaping the organization’s financial strategy and supporting long-term growth. The Director collaborates closely with executive leadership to inform financial decision-making, advise on fiscal planning, and ensure financial practices align with the organization’s mission and scaling goals. Success in this role requires strong nonprofit accounting expertise, people management experience, and a proactive, strategic mindset.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounting & Finance Operations
- Lead and manage all accounting operations, including accounts payable/receivable, bank reconciliations, journal entries, and monthly closings.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data.
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and federal/state nonprofit financial regulations.
- Manage cash flow and forecast liquidity needs.
- Serve as a key advisor to the CEO and leadership team on financial strategy, operational improvements, and long-term sustainability.
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to the Board Finance Committee and support financial decision-making at the governance level.
Grant & Contract Management
- Track and report on restricted and unrestricted grant funds.
- Collaborate with program staff to ensure spending aligns with grant budgets.
- Support funder financial reporting and contract compliance.
Audit & Compliance
- Coordinate annual audits and 990 preparation with external auditors.
- Maintain internal controls and ensure audit-ready documentation at all times.
- Monitor compliance with organizational policies and external requirements.
Payroll & Staffing Finance
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of biweekly payroll using ADP, in coordination with HR, while maintaining compliance with wage and hour laws.
- Reconcile payroll-related accounts and ensure proper allocation of labor costs to funding sources.
Team Leadership & Strategy
- Supervise and support accounting staff and/or contractors.
- Collaborate with executive leadership and the Board Finance Committee.
- Participate in long-range financial planning and forecasting.
- Support implementation of systems and processes to scale financial operations.
- Evaluate and grow the finance function, including hiring and developing staff as needed to support organizational growth.
Qualifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; Master’s degree (MBA, MAcc) preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in nonprofit accounting, including fund accounting and grant reporting.
- Proficiency in accounting software, specifically QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, particularly as it applies to nonprofit organizations (FASB ASC 958).
- Familiarity with federal and state grant compliance (e.g., OMB Uniform Guidance).
- Exceptional attention to detail, analytical thinking, and organizational skills.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- High degree of integrity, ethical judgment, and commitment to transparency.
Skills & Competencies:
- GAAP Expertise - Especially as it applies to nonprofit financial reporting (FASB ASC 958).
- Fund Accounting - Ability to manage and report on restricted vs. unrestricted funds.
- Financial Statement Preparation - Proficiency in generating accurate, audit-ready reports.
- Budgeting & Forecasting - Experience developing, monitoring, and adjusting budgets.
- Grant Accounting - Tracking, allocating, and reporting on grant funds accurately.
- Audit Management - Leading the annual audit process and liaising with auditors.
- Internal Controls - Establishing and maintaining strong financial oversight systems.
- Team Leadership - Ability to manage and develop finance or accounting staff.
- Strategic Thinking - Aligning financial practices with the organization's long-term goals.

Work Environment & Physical Demands
Frequent collaboration with internal departments in a supportive and team-oriented environment.
Regular communication in person, by phone, and via video conferencing.
Work is primarily performed in an office setting with standard equipment such as computers, phones, and printers.
Duties require sitting, standing, walking, and occasional lifting of materials up to twenty (20) pounds.
Occasional evening and weekend hours required for events or community outreach.
Some travel may be required on behalf of UCPIE.
