About the Department
This is an entry-level class that reports to the Animal Control Manager. Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties related to enforcing city ordinances governing the care and maintenance of animals in the city. Impounds, cares for, and disposes of animals as appropriate. Investigate complaints of animal disturbances and nuisances. Performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility, and other duties as assigned.
Position Duties
The duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is related or a logical assignment to this class.
- Perform a variety of duties related to the enforcement of city ordinances governing the care and maintenance of animals in the city.
- Enforce city animal control ordinances; interpret and explain to the public ordinances relating to the care and upkeep of animals; issue citations for violations of animal control ordinances; appear in municipal court as necessary; clean up dog and cat runs, feed and water animals in two different buildings.
- Patrol the city to search for animals running at large; investigate animal cruelty complaints; respond to calls and complaints regarding vicious, dead, stray, or diseased animals.
- Impound, quarantine, and dispose of animals as appropriate; provide basic treatment to injured animals; transport animals to a veterinarian for treatment; euthanize unclaimed, wounded, or sick animals; provide animal adoption services.
- Investigate reports or complaints of dogs, cats, or other animals creating nuisances and take appropriate action; investigate reports of animal abuse; follow up on reports of animal bites; prepare and monitor live animal traps as needed.
- Issue citations and notices to appear for violations of city ordinances; respond to public inquiries regarding domestic and wild animals; complete complaint cards, including outcome.
- Set and handle mosquito traps and check traps and standing water areas for mosquito larvae and treat with proper chemicals; spray the city when necessary for mosquitoes.
- Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience:
- High School diploma or GED.
- Preference may be given to applicants who have additional field-related education, training, or licensing that exceeds the minimum requirements for this position.
Licenses and Certificates:
A valid State driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
Special Requirements:
Certain positions within the classification may require availability to work a flexible schedule or irregular hours. Team members will be required to be reachable and ready to come to work immediately when a critical situation arises to help manage the response and minimize disruption to operations.

Physical Demands:
Effective audio-visual discrimination and perception are needed for making observations, communicating with others, speaking in a clear, audible voice, and operating assigned equipment.
The employee is regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and perform repetitive movements of hands or wrists. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds unaided. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Mental Demands:
While performing the duties of this class, an employee uses written and oral communication skills; reads and interprets data, information and documents; analyzes and solves problems; must have the mental capacity to euthanize animals, and determine/avoid dangerous situations; deal with multiple concurrent tasks; and interact with others encountered in the course of work, including frequent contact with customers and/or the public and dissatisfied/abusive individuals.
Work Environment:
The employee works in an outdoor/field environment traveling from site to site in a city-issued vehicle; Subject to high noise levels and exposure to extreme weather conditions, including exposure to a variety of domestic and wild animals, animal body fluids, and potentially hostile environments.
