DEPARTMENT: Fleet Maintenance, City of Rocky Mount
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for participating in the repair and maintenance of the City’s vehicle and equipment fleet. Responsible for providing service to all city fleet buses, PM and service repairs.
Repairs and PM will be performed at Manufacturer's recommendation and schedules as dictated by the Federal Transit Authority
Position Duties
- Inspects, diagnoses, and locates malfunctions in mechanical, electrical, air, and hydraulic systems.
- Performs general and skilled mechanical, hydraulic, and fabrication work.
- Operates diagnostic equipment and hand and power tools used in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Replaces or repairs faulty parts, including wheel bearings, seals, clutches, shock absorbers, and exhaust systems.
- Responds to breakdowns in the field; makes field repairs or arranges transport of disabled vehicles to shop.
- Performs state required inspections; inspects and replaces emission control devices; completes inspection forms.
- Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Cleans and washes equipment and vehicles as needed.
- Cleans and maintains tools and work areas.
- Maintains work time and materials records.
- Prepares equipment for auction.
- Performs minor cutting and welding repairs; fabricates parts.
- Installs specialized equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to include call in for natural and man-made disasters to maintain and support all Departments.
- Service camera and bus equipment.
- Assess heavy and light duty repairs when needed.
- Key job repair tickets and ordering parts.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of North Carolina Class B- CDL is required for this position.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Lead Mechanic assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department and division policies; equipment and vehicles repair manuals; and safety regulations. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related technical duties. The variety of vehicles and equipment to be maintained contributes to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to participate in the repair and maintenance of the City equipment and vehicle fleet. Success in this position contributes to the provision of a safe and operable fleet.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, members of the general public, and vendors.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion, sitting, standing, and walking. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- Required close visual acuity to perform activities like viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, warehouse, garage, or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
