About the Department
The Metro Nashville Public Health Department (MPHD) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Program Specialist 2 to join a team already dedicated to Notifiable Diseases & Emerging Infectious Diseases throughout Nashville and Davidson County. The ideal candidate will have experience in public health field work, and knowledge of immunizations, disease control, and investigation of reportable diseases in a community health program.

Position Duties
- Monitors reportable disease surveillance systems, also reviews reports received by fax to identify positive labs, with guidance from investigation protocol outlined by the Tennessee Department of Health
- Interview and re-interviews, when necessary, persons infected with or suspected of having a communicable disease to determine the source of the transmission.
- Counsel patients on preventative measures, test results, program services, and procedural guidelines in alignment with the Tennessee Reportable Disease Guidance.
- Requests and reviews medical records to abstract communicable disease data.
- Collaborating with healthcare providers, government agencies, and community organizations to coordinate public health efforts.
- Collect and transport patient specimens to the state laboratory.
- Enters data and investigation forms into databases.
- Assists with outbreak investigation and report completion.
- Provide educational lectures on communicable diseases.
- Participates in community screenings and health fairs.
- Participates in public health emergency response training, activities, and exercises.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in the Social Sciences, Public Health, or related field.
- Basic knowledge of local, state, and federal guidelines related to communicable disease transmission, prevention, and surveillance

Other Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in either the biological sciences, environmental health, public health, or a related field.
- Ability to efficiently multi-task daily and be self-motivated.
- Good customer service, verbal and written communication skills, and effective presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and in teams as needed.
- Good interpersonal relationship skills including cultural sensitivity & competence.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule and interact with diverse population.

- Ability to market effectively and foster a good relationship with healthcare providers and the community.
- Public health-related experience in infectious diseases with a good understanding of medical terminologies.
- Knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations applicable to public health agencies.
- Ability to interview, counsel, and communicate effectively with patients.
- Knowledge of community organizations and resources applicable to program needs and objectives.
