GENERAL SUMMARY
This position is responsible for all administrative tasks associated with Underwriting as well as additional responsibilities associated with the approval/administration of selected Community and Individually Rated groups. The Underwriting Specialist supports the Underwriting team to ensure the department's goals and objectives are met. The Underwriting Specialist is responsible for creating and distributing various reports to all levels of management.
This position will be with Stratacor, an affiliate of Delta Dental of Minnesota.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide support to members of the Underwriting department in their performance of the underwriting function.
- Respond to questions and resolve issues associated with community-rated and individually rated clients.
- Complete monthly renewal process for community-rated clients, reviewing rates, enrollment, and creating/distributing renewal summary.
- Complete SalesForce Forms requiring approval for new and existing pooled and large groups ensuring that all applicable underwriting guidelines have been adhered to and that approval is accomplished based on established turnaround times.
- Prepare monthly individually rated renewal summary and distribute the finalized summary to appropriate parties in an accurate and timely manner.
- Summarize and tally census data for use in proposal preparation.
- Develop, maintain, and deliver underwriting reporting activities, tools, dashboards, and metrics as required by management.
- Develop a working relationship with the underwriting department members and understand the function of each member.
- Complete assigned large group mid-contract evaluations and update equivalency rates on the anniversary of administrative services-only contracts as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by management.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, oral, and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to exercise good judgment and make independent decisions.
- Advanced computer skills, including but not limited to Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word, are necessary.
- Detail-oriented with demonstrated ability to multi-task and work successfully against deadlines.
- Interpersonal skills to deal with a variety of people and the professional demeanor to represent the company to external contacts.
- Customer service orientation toward internal and external parties.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- 4 - year college degree in business, finance, mathematics, or a related field preferred; or any combination of education and/or experience which would provide an equivalent background.
- Insurance Industry experience preferred.

RELATIONSHIPS
- Reports To: Underwriting Manager
- Internal Relationships: All levels of the corporation with frequent contact with Sales/account management, actuarial, and accounting departments.
- External Relationships: Brokers, consultants, and customers.

The starting salary range for this position is between $26.00 and $32.50 per hour. Salary offers will typically be made in the listed range. The Company takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including merit process and internal pay alignment when determining the salary for potential new team members. In compliance with state and federal regulations, a potential new team member's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
