General Job Summary: An exempt position responsible for rehabilitating persons with physical disabilities. Assess, plan, organize, and participate in rehabilitative programs that improve mobility, relieve pain, increase strength, and decrease or prevent deformity of patients suffering from disease, surgery, or injury. Supervise therapy staff and work closely with Director of Therapy Services to maximize function of therapy department.


Essential Job Functions:

  1. Provides day to day supervision of the physical/occupational therapy staff.
  2. Assists in the performance review process for the physical/occupational therapy department.
  3. Assists with maintaining appropriate staffing levels for the office including scheduling of employees.
  4. Assist the Director with recruiting efforts including interviews of candidates. 
  5. Maintains appropriate files and records to meet practice and regulatory requirements.
  6. Manages the patient relations process. 
  7. Adheres to all organization and department goals, policies and procedures to contribute to the efficiency of the office and organization.  
  8. Ensures there is confidentiality of practice information.
  9. Ensures compliance for the office with HIPAA, OSHA, overall safety, and federal and state licensure and regulations.
  10. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, providers, and co-workers.
  11. Responsible for ensuring the maintenance and annual review of physical and occupational therapy equipment.
  12. Helps patients to restore physical function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent permanent disability. Assists in restoring, maintaining, and promoting overall fitness and health.  
  13. Examines patient’s medical histories. Tests and measures patient’s strength, range of motion, balance and coordination, posture, muscle performance, respiration, and motor function.
  14. Determines patient’s ability to be independent and reintegrate into the workplace or community after injury or illness.
  15. Develops plans describing a treatment strategy, its purposes, and its anticipated outcome. Plans often includes exercise regimens at the clinic and at home to increase flexibility, strength, and endurance. May use modalities for pain relief, swelling reduction, and improved mobility including but not limited to: electrical stimulation, hot packs, cold packs, iontophoresis, vasopneumatic compression, dry needling, cupping, blood flow restriction and ultrasound.  
  16. Teaches patients how to use assistive and adaptive devices such as slings, braces, prostheses, and adaptive equipment.  
  17. Documents patient’s progress and conducts periodic reevaluations to help modify treatments and identify areas requiring more or less attention.  
  18. Compliance with exposure control standards/blood-borne and air-borne pathogens. Compliance with OSHA and safety standards of organization.
  19. Performs other duties that may be necessary or in the best interest of the department/practice.

Requirements

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from an accredited program and successful completion of clinical internships. Master’s or doctorate degree in physical therapy preferred. Minimum two years of experience as a physical therapist in an outpatient setting preferred. Management experience required. Current state license to practice as a physical therapist. CPR/AED training.    


Other Requirements: Schedules will change as department needs change including overtime and travel between therapy locations to support staff as needed.

  2. Knowledge of basic science including biology, chemistry, and physics as well as biomechanics, neuroanatomy, and disease manifestations.
  3. Knowledge of examination techniques and therapeutic procedures.
  4. Knowledge of HIPAA, OSHA, and safety regulations.
  5. Knowledge of payroll, electronic health records, and practice management systems.
  6. Knowledge of customer services standards.
  7. Knowledge and proficiency of word processing, computer/pc and internet/email skills.
  8. Knowledge and proper use of office equipment.

Skills:

  1. Skilled in appropriate evaluation and treatment of patients including hands-on procedures.  
  2. Skilled in using therapy equipment by consistently using devices appropriately to improve patient health status and function.
  3. Skilled in adaptability and able to change as organization and healthcare industry indicates.
  4. Skilled in use of a scheduling system within practice management software and accuracy in data entry.
  5. Skilled in organizing and multi-tasking. Can organize and prioritize work, schedules time to accommodate work demands, turnaround time requirements and commitments. 
  6. Skilled in being able to learn quickly. 

Abilities:

  1. Ability to effectively communicate in order to educate patients and staff. 
  2. Ability to demonstrate compassion and desire to help patients.
  3. Ability to analyze data and modify treatment plans as appropriate.
  4. Ability to organize work environment and work load to meet needs of the organization.
  5. Ability to function in a team-oriented environment.
  6. Must be flexible, reliable and demonstrate initiative and sound judgment.

Equipment Operated: Standard office and therapy equipment.


Work Environment: Physical and occupational therapy clinic.  


Mental/Physical Requirements: Often have to stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, and stand for long periods. Frequently move heavy equipment, lift patients or help them stand or walk. Occasionally must be able to lift and carry 50+ pounds. Periodic stress from workload or anxious patients.
