Job Purpose

  • Maintain, diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul fleet vehicles.

Tasks

  • Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment.
  • Align front ends and suspension systems.
  • Attach test instruments to equipment and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions.
  • Diagnose and repair vehicle heating and cooling systems.
  • Disassemble and overhaul internal combustion engines, pumps, generators, transmissions, clutches, and differential units.
  • Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.
  • Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.
  • Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery, such as pumps and compressors.
  • Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, or pressure gauges.
  • Inspecting, maintaining, and repairing auxiliary systems related to diesel engines, such as air brakes, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
  • Performing welding and fabrication tasks to repair or modify components or structures, such as engine mounts, brackets, or exhaust systems.
  • Install or repair accessories.
  • Operate valve-grinding machines to grind and reset valves.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
  • Raise trucks and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.
  • Rebuild gas or diesel engines.
  • Recondition and replace parts, pistons, bearings, gears, and valves.
  • Repair or adjust seats, doors, or windows.
  • Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.
  • Specialize in repairing and maintaining parts of the engine, such as fuel injection systems.
  • Test drive trucks to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly.
  • Adhering to safety protocols and ensuring compliance with environmental and regulatory standards while performing repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Maintaining accurate records of repairs, services performed, and parts used. May also order necessary parts and supplies.
  • Assisting and providing guidance to junior mechanics or apprentices in developing their skills and knowledge in diesel engine maintenance and repair.
  • Equipment and Tool Maintenance: Ensuring that all tools, equipment, and machinery are properly maintained, calibrated, and in good working condition.

Requirements

  • To be able to stand for long hours.
  • To stoop and bend with ease
  • To be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted
  • To work in an environment that often smells musty, putrid, or rancid
  • To potentially work in an environment that has seasonally high heat or low temperatures due to being outdoors
  • To potentially work in an environment that has wet or humid conditions due to be being outdoors
  • To be exposed to moving parts and/or fumes. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.

Qualifications

  • Clean Driving Record
  • Must be able to pass Drug Screen
  • 3+ Years of Diesel Experience
