Join Our Dynamic Team as an Operating Engineer Trainee!

Are you ready to dive into an exhilarating career where every day brings new challenges and opportunities? As an Operating Engineer Trainee, you'll be at the heart of our operations, working hands-on with cutting-edge plant equipment like turbines, boilers, pumps, compressors, and cooling towers. Your role will be diverse and dynamic, including troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining this vital machinery.

Under the expert guidance of a First-Class A or Chief A Engineer, you'll master the operation, inspection, and maintenance of a wide array of heating and air-conditioning systems, ventilation equipment, and computerized building automation systems. Imagine the thrill of working with high/low pressure boilers (steam or hydronic), steam turbines, and chillers!

But that's not all! You'll embark on an exciting journey through the State of Minnesota Boiler Operator licensing program, progressing through the ranks and honing your skills. Successfully complete the trainee program and pass the licensure examination, and you'll be eligible to step into the prestigious role of an Operating Engineer.

Hourly Rate
The 2025 starting hourly rate for the Operating Engineer Trainee is $38.036  
  • This starting hourly rate is 80% of the First Class A Operating Engineer hourly base rate ($47.545) as covered by the collective bargaining unit agreement between the MAC and the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 70. 
  • Trainees may receive a 5% increase every six months up to 95% of the First Class A Operating Engineer hourly rate until they have obtained their First Class A Operating Engineer Licensure.
Schedule/Shifts 
7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.  (day)
3:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. (afternoon)
11:00 p.m. - 7:00 a.m.  (night)

The trainee position will spend time each year on all three shifts. One to two months each year will be spend on both the afternoon and night shifts. The remainder of the year will be on day shift.  The schedule and/or shift may be adjusted for training or other purposes.

Safety-sensitive:  This is a safety-sensitive position which will require a pre-employment drug screen and physical.

Position Duties

Under the supervision of the Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer, or Operating Engineer, Operating Engineer Trainees will be expected to perform the following job duties:
 
Boiler Operation

  • Operate and maintain high- and low- pressure steam and hot water boilers
  • Conduct routine inspections and perform preventative maintenance on boilers, safety equipment, and other equipment
  • Prepare boilers for inspections
  • Change boilers to alternative fuels, oil & jet fuel from natural gas
  • Control operation and adjustment of water softeners, feed water systems, fuel oil, jet fuel pumps, etc.
  • Perform chemical analysis of boiler water, test and treat condensate return, and accurately prepare reports
  • Observe related boiler equipment; makes necessary adjustments and repairs
  • Perform emergency repairs to boilers or related equipment as directed
  • Order and receive deliveries of oil and jet fuel
 Turbine Operation
  • Operate high pressure steam turbines
  • Conduct routine inspections and perform preventative and corrective maintenance on steam power turbines
  • Start up, synchronize, shut down, and adjust turbines
 Chiller Operation
  • Operate chiller compressors (reciprocating and centrifugal), cooling towers and related equipment
  • Start up, shut down, inspect, and perform preventative maintenance on cooling towers systems, pumps, valves, etc.
  • Perform chemical analysis of chiller loop water and condenser water, treat, and accurately prepare reports
 Building Automation
  • Regularly scan heating and cooling systems; troubleshoot electronic and pneumatic control centers; make adjustments to maintain proper climate controls
  • Control ventilating equipment in vehicle tunnels
  • Respond to alarms, identify malfunctions or abnormal operation of equipment and facilities; make necessary adjustments or emergency repairs and inform proper authorities
 Building Maintenance
  • Perform preventative maintenance on HVAC units
  • Maintain, repair and troubleshoot heating and cooling systems
  • Perform emergency assistance with vendors during equipment or other energy management failures affecting terminal operation
  • Appropriately apply lock-out/tag-out and other safety procedures
 Miscellaneous Duties
  • Maintain safe and clean facilities
  • Read charts, gauges, levels, and temperatures for all systems; accurately document data as required
  • Maintain daily log on equipment performance and plant activities
  • Operate computerized preventative maintenance program
  • Complete other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of skilled mechanical and/or facilities maintenance experience including mechanical HVAC, steam or hot water boilers and/or chemical control testing - OR - enrollment in, or completion of, an HVAC training program
  • Good mathematical aptitude
  • Valid State of Minnesota Special Boiler Operator license or ability to obtain licensure by hire date
  • Valid state-issued driver's license
  • Ability to work within small and confined spaces and from ladder/lifts at varying heights
  • Ability to lift, position and pull up to 50 pounds
  • Clear and articulate written and oral communication skills
  • Basic skill level in word processing and email computer functions
  • Willing to respond to emergency calls seven days a week on a 24-hour basis
  • Ability to obtain and maintain MAC required licenses and/or certifications
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience in HVAC operations
  • State of Minnesota Boiler License (below First Class A Engineer)
  • Experience in maintenance and repairs including boilers, chillers, air handling systems, piping systems, pumps, air conditioning/refrigeration systems, emergency generators and/or building/equipment electrical systems
  • Valid State of Minnesota Universal Refrigeration Certificate
  • Experience using a Building Automation System (BAS), Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), and/or other facilities maintenance system

Other Qualifications
