**Overview:**
The Lab Technician is responsible for supporting the paint, metal finishing, and powder coating process through various laboratory activities. This role involves conducting tests, analyzing samples, and ensuring that powder coating formulations meet quality standards. The technician plays a crucial role in maintaining the quality and consistency of powder coating materials.
**Key Responsibilities:**
1. **Quality Control Testing:**
- Monitors the quality of water being treated.
- Inspects and adjusts the quality of metal finishing tanks.
2. **Formulation Testing and Development:**
- Changes tanks. Adds chemicals.
- Keeps records of chemical, preventive maintenance of wasted water treatment system.
3 **Sample Preparation:**
- Prepare samples of powder coating materials for testing and analysis.
- Ensure samples are representative of production batches and adhere to testing standards.
4. **Equipment Calibration and Maintenance:**
- Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment used in testing and analysis.
- Perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot any issues to ensure accurate and reliable results.
- Calibrates probes, cleans filter press, and runs test panels for metal finishing.
5. **Data Analysis and Reporting:**
- Analyze test results and generate reports summarizing findings.
6. **Documentation:**
- Maintain detailed records of test procedures, formulations, and test results.
- Keep records of chemicals, preventive maintenance of wasted water treatment system.
- Ensure compliance with documentation standards and protocols.
- Monitor waste removal according to IEPA standards.
7. **Collaboration:**
- Collaborate with production teams, quality assurance, and R&D departments to address any issues related to paint, metal finishing, and powder coating formulations.
- Provide technical support and expertise as needed.
8. **Continuous Improvement:**
- Identify opportunities for process improvement in the laboratory and suggest enhancements to achieve better efficiency and accuracy.
- Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in paint, metal finishing, and powder coating technology.
Requirements
**Qualifications:**
- Two to four years’ experience as a lab technician, preferably in the field of powder coating or related materials.
- Experience operating a forklift truck efficiently.
- Knowledge of powder coating materials, formulations, and testing methods.
- Familiarity with laboratory equipment and instruments used in material testing.
- Detail-oriented with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Proficient in data analysis and report generation.
**Education:**
- A degree or certification in chemistry, materials science, or a related field is typically required.
- Additional training or coursework in powder coating technology is advantageous.
- Special certification (class K) pretreatment wastewater license required.
**Physical Requirements:**
The role is predominantly lab-based, involving the use of laboratory equipment and instruments. Physical fitness and attention to safety protocols are important, but heavy physical demands are typically minimal. Proper PPE required including face masks.
