THIS POSITION IS FOR APPLICANTS CURRENTLY CERTIFIED AS FIREFIGHTER I AND A LICENSED PARAMEDIC
THE STARTING SALARY RANGE FOR THIS POSITION IS $68,275.67 - 71,732.12.
THE SELECTED APPLICANT'S SALARY WILL BE WITHIN THIS RANGE BASED ON CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE.
This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.
The position of Firefighter requires an individual to deal with all types of fire, rescue, EMS, and hazardous material situations.
Position Duties
Essential Functions:
- Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.
- Prepares for emergencies by conducting pre-incident planning, life safety inspections, equipment testing, and ensuring the daily operational readiness of all fire and rescue equipment.
- Responds to all emergencies/non-emergency calls including fires, vehicle accidents/extrication, medical emergencies, aircraft, trains, natural disasters, hazardous materials, special operations rescues, public assistance, etc.
- Trains for a variety of emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Educates and informs the public on fire safety, fire department operations and general public assistance.
- Facilitates the upkeep of fire stations including general cleaning, painting, pressure washing, waxing, mowing/weeding, beautification, changing light bulbs, etc.
- Completes EMS and fire reports, purchase order requests, maintenance order requests, statistical data entry, and evaluation of property loss.
- Audits fire and medical reports for Fire Department administration.
- Participate in fire pre-planning of businesses and public buildings.
- Checks facilities for hazards to life and safety.
- Acts as Engineer/Driver in an Engineer/Driver’s absence.
- Assists with the Fire Prevention Program.
- Gathers, organizes, analyzes, examines, or evaluates data or information and may prescribe action based on this data or information.
- Provides information, guidance or assistance to people that directly facilitates task accomplishment; may give instructions or assignments to helpers or assistants.
- Communicate effectively with groups of coworkers, staff from other agencies, members of the public, and professionals from outside organizations. Delivers presentations and training sessions; prepares original reports, training materials, and other written content using correct grammar, punctuation, and professional style.
- Provides guidance and direction to others, making frequent decisions that impact colleagues, individuals, and the public relying on the service. Operates in a dynamic environment governed by rules and procedures yet often requires adaptation due to non-routine situations.
- Engages in work that involves adherence to established systems and protocols, requiring consistent problem-solving and focused attention to ensure accuracy. Occasionally works under atypical pressure or challenging circumstances.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Physical Demands:
- Frequently required to sit and talk, hear, and walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
- Occasionally required to climb heights more than one hundred (100) feet; balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl on uneven surfaces and in confined spaces; and taste or smell.
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to seventy-five (75) pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 175 pounds or larger with assistance.
- In most cases, all physical demands will be encountered while wearing an additional fifty (50) pounds of structural firefighting gear and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
- Requires a visual minimum of 20/100 each eye uncorrected and 20/30 each eye corrected and the abilities to distinguish colors.
- Leads or handles machines, tools, equipment, or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items.
- Involves routine and frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals; explosives; violence.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Uses addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division and/or calculates ratios, rates, and percentages.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must pass a physical examination, including medical history, by a licensed physician upon offer of employment.
Fire Certifications
- Must be certified by the State of Tennessee Firefighting Personnel Standards and Education as Firefighter I (FFI) or must meet current requirements for reciprocity as Firefighter I.
- You must attain Firefighter II (FFII) Certification within one (1) year of being hired. If an employee must attend an approved recruit academy, they will have 12 months from the end of the recruit academy to attain their FFII certification.
- Must successfully complete an approved Smoke Diver course within the first twenty-four (24) months of employment or completion of an approved recruit academy. Failure to successfully complete the Smoke Diver course within the first twenty-four (24) months of employment or after the completion of an approved recruit academy shall result in termination. The candidate will have a maximum of three attempts to complete the Smoke Diver course during the 24-month period.
- Required to maintain all emergency services related licenses and certifications obtained prior to or during employment with the Fire Rescue Department for the entire duration of employment.
EMS Licensure/Certification
- Must be currently licensed in the State of Tennessee as a paramedic or must be currently licensed in another state and hold or have held a National Registry Certification as a Paramedic. Licensure with the State of Tennessee through reciprocity must be attained within 90 days of hire.
