About the Department

The Community Risk Reduction Educator works under the general direction of the Fire Marshal in Community Risk Reduction. This position is responsible for the development and implementation of public education programs and materials focused on reducing areas of community risk identified by the Fire-EMS Department. This position is community-facing and interfaces routinely with local entities, volunteer groups, and educational facilities. The Educator matches community risk identifiers with programs targeted at reducing risk with vulnerable populations. These programs may be existing ‘packaged’ programs or internally developed in-house or with partner agencies.

 

General responsibilities include the development, implementation, and administration of programs and systems that:

  • support high-performance strategies to meet organizational needs
  • promote organizational mission, vision, and values throughout the department
  • facilitate the execution of the vision and direction of the Fire-EMS Chief and the best interests of the Fire/EMS Department and the Columbus Consolidated Government (CCG)

This position is responsible for the preparation and delivery of age/population-appropriate educational material, lesson plans, handouts, and other associated instructional media. Community risk metrics are provided by the Fire Marshal and the Deputy Chief of Community Risk Reduction. The Educator exercises considerable independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments. This position may interact with counterparts across the Columbus Consolidate Government (particularly in public safety) to promote risk reduction education in the community.


Operates a motor vehicle with an appropriate driver's license to travel to various locations to give safety presentations and attend meetings.

Operates a variety of standard office equipment.

Operates various audio-visual equipment such as projectors, digital monitors, and remote-controlled props.

Prepares and updates schedules, graphs, charts, or props for displays and presentations.

Prepares boxes/bundles of forms, mail, pamphlets, and newsletters for distribution and mailing.

Moves classroom equipment and materials using a handcart/dolly.

Lifts and carries objects such as laptops and screens for distances up to 100 feet or more.

Sets up and/or removes folding tables and chairs for classroom settings and various events.

Stands for extended periods of time to make presentations.

May work in a variety of weather conditions while participating in outdoor events.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicant must be 21 years of age at the date of the application

Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.

Applicant must be either a U.S. citizen or resident alien

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required

Successful candidates must pass a drug screen and extensive background check; subject to random drug testing.


Preferred Qualifications

Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university

Experience in education with various groups

Ability to speak and understand Spanish language

Other Qualifications

The work is typically performed while sitting, with intermittent standing and stooping.  The employee must occasionally lift light objects and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.  Additionally, the following physical abilities are required

  • Visual Acuity 1 - prepare, analyze data, transcribing, computer terminal, extensive reading.
  • Visual Acuity 2 - color, depth perception, field of vision.
  • Visual Acuity 3 - determine accuracy, neatness, observe facilities/structures.
  • Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.
