Position Duties

WHAT YOU WILL DO

This position provides administrative and legal support to the Criminal Appeals Section at the Colorado Attorney General’s Office. The section includes 40 attorneys3 administrative professionals, a paralegal, and a victim services coordinator. The team is responsible for defending criminal convictions on appeal in both state and federal courts and supporting prosecutors statewide on complex matters of criminal law and procedure.

Key Responsibilities:


Case and File Management
• Organize, archive, and purge closed case files according to office protocols.
• Scan and upload physical documents into the ProLaw system and retrieve older files from storage when needed.
• Manage the internal brief bank and ensure filed briefs are saved accurately and distributed appropriately.


Legal and Administrative Support
• Draft and e-file legal documents such as pleadings and notices.
• Update case management systems with attorney assignments, court filings, and key case details.
• Assist with opening new cases and ensuring documentation is complete and accurate.
• Process incoming and outgoing mail, coordinate deliveries, and fulfill court-related requests.


Court Coordination and Records Retrieval
• Serve as liaison between attorneys and court clerks.
• Request and retrieve court records from the Colorado Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.
• Coordinate delivery and return of records as needed to support active cases.


Legal Document Formatting and Brief Coding
• Code legal briefs for formatting consistency and accuracy using tables of contents and authorities.
• Identify legal references such as case law, statutes, and rules to ensure proper document preparation.


Office and Team Support
• Provide general support to legal assistants and attorneys.
• Assist with reception coverage and shared office responsibilities, including handling shredding logistics and maintaining supplies in the workroom.



This recruitment may be used to fill more than one Administrative Assistant II positions in the Criminal Appeals section.


Salary note: Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate's qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.
 



Minimum Qualifications

Residency Requirement:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Please document all relevant experience in detail on your application. Experience will not be inferred or assumed. Any part-time experience listed will be prorated.

Experience Only: 
Two (2) years of general clerical/office support experience as the primary function of the job. 

OR 

Education and Experience: 
A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in general clerical/office support as the primary function of the job equal to two (2) years. This must include at least one (1) year of the general clerical/office support experience to qualify. 

If qualifying under the substitution, you will be required to provide a copy of your transcripts.    

Note: Candidates possessing a foreign degree must submit a translation (evaluation) of their degree from an accredited institution, such as The National Association of Credential Evaluations Services in order to be given credit for the degree. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: In addition to the minimum qualifications, if you possess any of the following specifically include the details on your application, as this information will be used to assess your qualifications and may be used to determine a top group of applicants. 


  • General clerical experience in a law officelegal setting or similar office setting

Conditions of Employment:

  • Applicants must pass a thorough background investigation prior to appointment.

  • Criminal Appeals offers flexible work arrangements. New employees are generally expected to work in-office 3-4 days a week. Additional flexibility will be considered for employees after a successful onboarding and training period. Please note, flexible work arrangements may change at any time based on business needs.  

 
Appeal Rights:  
An applicant who has been removed from an employment list or removed from consideration during the selection process may request a review by the State Personnel Director.

Review of the completed, signed and submitted appeal will be timely on the basis of written material submitted by you, using the official appeal form signed by you or your representative.
