General Description:

General Function: 

Under the supervision of the Senior Finance Manager (SFM), the Accounting Specialist is responsible to support the MFS Finance Department. Position will oversee accounts payable, billing support, general ledger support, and other duties as assigned. Position will provide backup support to the Paycom payroll processing functions.

Finance Responsibilities

  • Process all accounts payable invoices, check requests and reimbursements for the agency on a weekly basis
  • Process and review check requests from employees ensuring correct cost accounting information for programs is provided and recorded
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date accounts payable files and records in a timely manner
  • Researches and resolves employee questions, issues and concerns
  • Assure all invoices, check requests, and employee credit card logs include all receipts necessary to back up payments and charges.
  • Supports Finance Department with various department needs such as client and contract billing, general ledger, financial reports and other needs as determined by the Chief Financial Officer
  • Work with the SFM to learn payroll processing systems and provide back-up to payroll processing as needed
  • Work directly with the SFM to provide project management to document MFS Finance Department processes and procedures in a consistent and usable format
  • Comply with Metropolitan Family Service policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook
  • Effectively and consistently market the organization, communicating about MFS and its programs in a way that is both compelling and on message. Follow marketing guidelines in place when communicating with staff, volunteers, clients, partners, and potential supporters
  • Other duties may be assigned by the SFM and/or the CFO

 

Qualifications


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:  

  • Sound technical accounting skills, analytical abilities, good judgement including ability to effectively use financial IT tools, systems and programs
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent support and responsiveness to both internal staff and external partners
  • Strong ethical decision making and including establishing and maintaining a trusting working relationship with the SFM and the CFO
  • Demonstrated skills to be well organized and self-directed
  • Values working in a multi-cultural, diverse environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team dependent environment
  • Demonstratd ability to communicate orally and in writing, as well as establish and maintain good effective relationships with internal staff and external partners

  • Manual and physical dexterity allowing for performance of job functions, including computer use, phone use, copying, filing and using office equipment

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Prefer Bachelor degree in Finance, Accounting or related field or related, equivalent experience
  • Experience using the Paycom HRIS system is preferable
  • Minimum of two years of accounting experience to include general ledger, financial statements, accounts payable and receivable
  • Experience in payroll processing is preferred

Other Requirements:

Personal transportation allowing for travel within the Portland Metropolitan area in a timely manner.  If driving a personal vehicle must maintain a valid driver license for the state of residency, personal auto liability insurance coverage and a driving record permitting coverage under the agency auto liability policy.

MFS requires all employees and volunteers to complete a criminal background check.  We review the results of all background checks individually and consider all of the circumstances of any issues that arise in a background check during the hiring process.

Work Environment:

Work is normally performed in an office environment and/or at other locations as deemed necessary.  May require occasional early morning, weekend or evening work.  Position requires ability to sit for extended periods as well as stand occasionally.  Position requires use of computer, telephone, copier and may require accessing locations by use of stairs.
