Summary:

The Macomb Daily is looking for a Sports Reporter to lead local sports coverage across all Michigan Cluster media platforms. This role demands a journalist who excels at speed, accuracy, and quality, managing everything from breaking news to in-depth enterprise content. You'll be a digital mentor, deeply engaging with the community, and using audience data to shape content, all while embracing a fast-paced, evolving media landscape.

Schedules may include weekdays and/or weekend days, and hours will vary with seasonal needs.

What you will do:

  • Oversee the day-to-day sports content budget and published coverage for The Macomb Daily

  • Work with staff and freelance writers to plan daily coverage

  • Collaborate with the MNG Michigan regional sports editor on OP digital sports initiatives and community engagement

  • Work to increase Macomb County coach, school, booster, and athletic director involvement

  • Partner with the MNG Michigan regional sports editor to recruit and train freelance photographers and writers

  • Work with the MNG Michigan regional sports editor to increase knowledge and growth on social media

  • Serve as a digital mentor and teacher within the team

  • Post frequent and incremental online updates throughout the day

  • Understand and engage in story aggregation and posting of links

  • Treat the audience as partners and actively engage them in developing content

  • Monitor audience and community feedback, constructively interacting on traditional and emerging digital platforms

  • Monitor audience interest and competitors' posting on your community or topic, including setting up Google alerts, Twitter, and RSS feeds

  • Expertly use hardware, software, and cloud-based equipment for direct-to-web production and engagement, including posting photographs, stories, databases, and short videos

What you will bring:

  • Five years of experience creating online and print content that differentiates the Michigan Cluster from competitors

  • A degree in journalism, communications, or a related field

  • Exceptional reporting, writing, organizational, and story structure skills

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Ability to tell stories and engage audiences using existing and emerging tools

  • Experience building, maintaining, and engaging audiences and communities

  • Ability to work independently and remotely under deadline pressure, and to prioritize tasks appropriately

  • Understanding of the imperatives of existing and emerging platforms, including print, mobile, and web

The Macomb Daily is part of the Michigan Cluster Business Unit of MediaNews Group (MNG). You'll report directly to the Regional Sports Editor. We expect our sports multimedia reporters to be deeply sourced in their assigned beats and to constantly monitor audience metrics to shape coverage.   • Travel – This position entails occasional driving for work assignments, training sessions, and/or meetings. The employee will be responsible for transporting themselves between different sites as needed

  • Must be available for shift work. May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
