Join Our Team! Recreation, Parks & Arts Program Support Specialist

The City of Largo is seeking an enthusiastic team member to help bring our Recreation, Parks, and Arts programs to life! In this dynamic role, you’ll support staff in delivering engaging, high-quality leisure activities to the community. Responsibilities include planning, implementing, supervising, and participating in a variety of recreational programs.

This position offers a blend of independence and collaboration, with clear guidance from an assigned supervisor and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact through positive community engagement.

Hours are midday with weekend availability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

All employees share components of leadership, management, technical, and team skills to assist in making the City of Largo the community of choice in Tampa Bay.

 

Leadership

Management

         Effectively manages assignments and priorities to ensure the fulfillment of projects, tasks, and responsibilities

         Follows suggested procedures to ensure the highest standards of risk management, employee safety, and risk avoidance

Technical

      Plans and executes leisure activities such as sports, arts and crafts, drama, special events, environmental education, tours, field trips, etc.; participates in teaching one or more leisure activities; may supervise a group of children, including planning activities and administering discipline in a camp situation or after school program

      Opens, closes, and secures the facility and ensures all rules and regulations of the facilities are enforced; ensures all precautions are taken in maintaining participant’s safety; assures the safety, welfare, and well-being of children enrolled in programs

      Assists in training staff and volunteers

      Inputs and retrieves data from the computer

      Maintains communication between customers and other staff

      Supports the division and the department in external activities

      Processes documents and applications pertaining to membership and registrations

      Collects activity fees and processes payments

      Prepares daily activity reports

      Assists with the maintenance, opening, and securing of the facility and equipment

      May be responsible for the department's public relations by designing and updating the bulletin board, marquees, and fliers as requested

      Tracks daily facility attendance and may track financial activities

      Administers first aid when necessary and completes appropriate reports

      Sets up and breaks down rooms for activities as appropriate

      Participates in the maintenance of facility cleanliness

      May complete daily fitness/safety inspections

      Staff assigned to nature parks works with an environmental education focus, creates, and updates park displays and exhibits; handles wildlife for educational purposes, and performs general park maintenance

         Supports honest and transparent decision-making

         Collaborates with all team members in a way that builds upon ideas and takes personal accountability and ownership of projects, roles, and assignments

         Openly exhibits a positive attitude, in words and action, and encourages others to do the same

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS: As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education and Experience:

 

PART-TIME POSITIONS

      Must be 16 years old at the date of application

      Some experience in recreation setting or customer service preferred

      Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) first aid is required within 90 days of hire; training is provided

      Team Members under the age of 18 will be restricted from the following tasks:

    Driving any vehicles (including personal vehicles) during scheduled work hours

    Operating grounds maintenance tools

    Operating tennis court tractor

 

FULL-TIME POSITIONS

      Must be at least 18 years old due to Pinellas County Childcare Licensing Board requirement

      High School Diploma or general education diploma (GED) required

      Some experience in a recreation setting, customer service, or childcare programs preferred

      Certification in CPR and AED first aid is required within 90 days of hire; training is provided

      Completion of License Board training requirements within one year of hire date

      Preferred training/licenses:

    Staff Member in Charge Certification (SMIC) and Childcare 40 clock-hour training

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

      Must be

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Work Environment: 40% inside a climate-controlled building; 60% outside, which may include driving. Depending on the assignment, work environments may vary significantly.
Physical Requirements: The essential functions of the job require: sitting approximately two (2) hours per day, standing approximately four (4) hours per day, and walking approximately two (2) hours per day. The work often requires bending/stooping, climbing, crawling, fine manipulations, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 15 pounds, lifting/carrying of objects weighing 15 to 44 pounds, and lifting/carrying of objects weighing 45 pounds and over.
Sensory Requirements: Hearing: Ability to understand what others are saying in normal conversation in person and on the telephone, and to hear children. Speaking: Ability to communicate orally with others in person and on the telephone Seeing: Ability to see and read computer monitor screens, supervise children, and if assigned, drive and perform tennis court maintenance.
Driving RequirementsStaff members under the age of 18 years old are NOT permitted to drive. Staff members aged 18 years or older may occasionally drive and must possess a valid Florida Class E Driver's License.
Technology: The work requires ability to operate telephones, smartphones, tablets, laminators, photocopiers, printers, desktop and/or laptop computers, calculators, park radios, and all associated software.

Other Tools:  Grounds maintenance tools and may operate a tennis court tractor.
