About the job

About Us

Purpose Analytics helps non-profits understand, use, and harness the power of their data more effectively. Through solutions designed for non-profits and developed with impact in mind, we’ll help you realize the potential of data to inform storytelling, decision-making, and strategic thinking.

About the Role

We are looking for a skilled data scientist who is interested in supporting non-profits to make the most effective use of their data and in contributing to the development of our social enterprise. You will work closely with clients to translate their needs into reproducible workflows that are sustainable and scaled appropriately to their size.

While you will write code most days, you will readily adopt other technologies (including low-code and low-tech) to best meet client needs. Currently, process improvement and workflow automation tasks are integral to much of our project work. You will also be a thoughtful relationship manager, recognizing that data projects are one of many tasks that non-profit administrators juggle and that taking on project management and other duties is a way that we add value for our clients. In short, you are capable of filling many roles and you know when to offer help. Finally, as part of a small team, you will have an interest in working with your colleagues to shape Purpose Analytics’ strategic direction and organizational culture as we grow.

Our work with non-profits is direct and highly applied – we are not a tech company or an innovation lab – and our day-to-day work will appeal to candidates who enjoy hands-on involvement in delivering the data pipelines and analysis that non-profits need right now while being mindful of future opportunities to scale solutions more broadly.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in R or Python is a necessity
  • Experience working with real-world data (and real-world people)
  • Skilled in exploratory data analysis and mapping data flows
  • Experience with integrating datasets and reviewing data sources, tools, and methodologies
  • Solid relationship management skills including the ability to translate client needs into component parts, articulate clear solutions, and the flexibility to support projects where needed
  • Good communications skills with an aptitude for translating technical outputs into compelling stories
  • Competent documentation skills including code commenting and writing user guide and training materials
  • Experience with software development tools and practices (e.g. version control)
  • Understanding of legislation around privacy and best practices for securing data

Nice to have

  • Previous non-profit experience
  • Knowledge of Microsoft 365, Power Platform, and/or Azure (since 90% of our clients are Microsoft customers)
  • Experience with business intelligence tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau, Looker)
  • Familiarity with R Shiny or other web application frameworks
  • GIS and spatial analysis skills
  • Design sensibility
  • Familiarity with container-based deployment (e.g. Docker)
  • You tell us!

This is a full-time position based remotely in Canada with a salary range of $82,013 to $98,416. We offer 3 weeks paid vacation to start (increasing to 4 weeks after one year), an office closure during the winter holidays, health and dental benefits, and choice in the computing equipment you use.

We strongly encourage applications from members of Black, Indigenous, and other racialized communities; people reflecting diverse sexual orientations and gender identities; people with disabilities; and members of other equity seeking groups that face systemic discrimination.
