TITLE: Elementary Mentoring & Community Involvement Coordinator

 

LOCATION:  Thomas Paine Elementary 

 

SUPERVISOR: Director of Mentoring and Community Involvement and Building Principal

 

JOB SUMMARY: The Elementary Mentoring & Community Involvement Coordinator works collaboratively with community groups and school personnel to implement and expand school based mentoring program. He/she serves as the liaison between community groups, business partners, and assigned elementary locations. The Mentoring & Community Involvement Coordinator also provides ongoing support and maintains accurate records and files on all mentors, tutors, business partners, and other volunteers at assigned elementary locations.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

 

C-U One-to-One Mentor Program and other mentor programs

  • Recruitment
    • Maintain and provide needed updates to current C-U One to One Mentors database.
    • Work with other mentor program staff to promote C-U One to One Mentor Program in the community and within assigned elementary school locations.
    • Work with other mentor program staff to recruit new mentors.
  • Site Development
    • Educate elementary school staff, particularly 4-5th grade teachers, about the parameters and goals of mentoring and the Mentoring Grant
    • Identify, assemble, and coordinate a Mentor Support Team at assigned elementary site locations
    • Assist teachers in appropriate communication with mentors
  • Screening and Orientation
    • Keep a copy of the mentor application on file.
    • Check references and conduct interviews for mentor applicants.
    • Provide on-site orientation for new mentors.
  • Student Selection and Matching
    • Compile and maintain a list of deserving students to be matched with a mentor.
    • Secure parental permission for students to participate in the program and explain program parameters to students.
    • With Mentor Support Team, match students with appropriate mentor.
  • On-going Support and Supervision
    • Contact the mentor within two weeks of the match and then monthly to assess if intervention is needed.
    • Maintain accurate contact information on file for each mentor.
    • Provide additional support and information for mentors.
    • Provide match intervention if necessary.
    • Work with the Mentor Project Director to facilitate transfer of student/mentor pair to new school site if applicable.
    • Compile sign-in sheet hours and report totals to the Project Director quarterly.
  • Participant Appreciation
    • Coordinate site-specific appreciation events.
    • Assist in year-end celebration activities/banquets
  • Evaluation
    • Assist in evaluating mentor programs by assuring that forms are filled out promptly as requested.

Business Partnership Development

  • Identify potential business partners for assigned elementary school locations.
  • Work with the Scholarship Foundation and other Mentor Program staff in recruiting business partnerships for assigned elementary school locations.
  • Act as the school liaison for any school-business partnerships established for assigned elementary school locations.

Other Volunteer/Community Involvement (to be negotiated at each building)

  • Act as the school liaison to the University of Illinois Volunteer Programs.
  • Provide screening and orientation for all parent volunteers, tutors, and other volunteers at assigned elementary school locations.
  • Maintain accurate contact information on file for each parent volunteer, tutor, and other volunteers.
  • Compile sign-in sheet hours and report totals to the building principal quarterly.
  • Act as the liaison between volunteers and staff at assigned elementary school locations.
  • Facilitate periodic recognition events for parent volunteers, tutors, and other volunteers.

Other Duties

  • Attend monthly cross-district meetings of Community Involvement/Mentor Coordinators

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s Degree or a minimum of 30 hours of college credit
  • Knowledge and ability to work with community and local businesses.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate with diverse populations.
  • Solid computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and Excel.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • This is not a position within the collective bargaining unit and is not an administrative position.
  • The position is two days per week for 5 hours on student attendance days
  • This is a non-exempt position.

 

EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
