Position Summary
We are looking for a full-time Associate Database Engineer (HBase) (Official title: Associate Database Engineer II) for our San Diego-based corporate office.
As part of the SHEIN DBRE team, you will play a key role in ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of our database infrastructure through automation and scalable solutions. Our team integrates DBA, SRE, and DBRE expertise to deliver highly available data services.
We design resilient architectures to meet evolving business and data processing demands, prioritizing efficiency and system reliability. While each team member may have their preferred technologies, a deep understanding of database fundamentals—and how different database systems interact with applications and operating systems—is essential for success. This role requires collaboration across multiple customer environments and global teams.
Job Responsibilities
• Manage and monitor HBase clusters to ensure high availability, reliability, and performance; participate in on-call rotation.
• Perform operational tasks such as table creation, schema changes, capacity planning, and backup/recovery procedures.
• Troubleshoot issues in coordination with senior engineers; document root causes and solutions for knowledge sharing.
• Collaborate with product and analytics teams to support and optimize HBase usage.
• Continuously build expertise in HBase internals, distributed systems, and the broader Hadoop ecosystem.
• Develop cross-functional knowledge in traditional RDBMS administration to complement NoSQL operations.
• Assist in maintaining MySQL databases, including monitoring, routine operations, and query optimization under guidance.
Job Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field.
• Strong foundation in Linux system administration and shell scripting.
• Programming experience with Java or Scala; Python knowledge is a plus.
• Understanding of distributed systems concepts (e.g., replication, consistency, fault tolerance).
• Exposure to HBase or other NoSQL databases; hands-on projects or internships highly valued.
• Familiarity with Hadoop ecosystem components (HDFS, Zookeeper, Hive, Spark) preferred.
• Completed at least one formal Database Systems course
• Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and effective communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
