About Shopify

Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. We propel entrepreneurs and enterprises to scale the heights of their potential. Since 2006, we’ve grown to over 8,300 employees and generated over $947 billion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries.

This is life-defining work that directly impacts people’s lives as much as it transforms your own. This is putting the power of the few in the hands of the many, is a future with more voices rather than fewer, and is creating more choices instead of an elite option.

About You

Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone.

Before you apply, consider if you can:

  • Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
  • Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
  • Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
  • Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
  • Bring critical thought and opinion
  • Embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
  • Work digital-first for your daily work

About The Role

As a Senior Staff Engineer on the Client Platform Engineering team at Shopify, you will play a pivotal role in defining and delivering the security engineering roadmap for our fleet of employee devices. This role requires a deep understanding of client platform technologies, including Jamf MDM, and operating systems such as macOS and ChromeOS, as well as expertise in technologies such as Google Workspace.

About The Team

The Client Platform Engineering team, part of the broader Trust team, focuses daily on keeping our employee operating environment as secure and performant as possible. They are responsible for building, maintaining and supporting our employee endpoint devices. You’ll be doing things like

  • Defining the engineering direction and roadmap for the Client Platform Engineering team that aligns with company goals.
  • Providing technical oversight for the maintenance of existing device controls and the design / development of new controls to achieve a secure and performant operating environment.
  • Championing engineering initiatives related to device controls including browser security, patch management and endpoint protection.
  • Working alongside engineering teams to troubleshoot issues and optimize performance of controls.
  • Leading the deployment of company wide technical solutions that affect the employee operating environment.

  • Collaborating with engineering teams and all levels of leadership to understand requirements and translate them into actionable plans and deliverables.
  • Providing technical guidance and mentorship to team members, sharing knowledge and best practices to foster a culture of constant learning within the team.
  • Holding a high bar on technical decision making, and setting a standard for engineering artifacts that the team creates, such as code and design docs.
  • Developing & monitor device health tripwires, establishing a strong detection and resolution practice to prevent employee downtime.
  • Triaging and resolving service disruptions impacting employees, and quarterbacking solutions as needed.

What You Bring To The Team

  • Experience in senior technical roles, preferably in a fast-paced, engineering focused environment.
  • Deep understanding of OS-level system architecture. We want someone who can look under the hood and understand why things work the way they do - and why they sometimes don’t.
  • Strong technical background in client platform engineering, including expertise in technologies such as Google Workspace and Jamf Pro and operating systems such as macOS and chromeOS.
  • Experience in championing large scale secure browser security initiatives, such as patch management, and Apple services like managed IDs.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and all levels of leadership.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a focus on delivering results and driving continuous improvement.
  • Passion for staying updated with the latest industry trends and technologies, and a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
