Your Role and What You'll Be Doing


Your Role


As a Quality Assurance Engineer at Irwin Mitchell, your role will encompass the planning, designing, and execution of comprehensive testing to ensure the quality and reliability of our data products.


Your primary responsibility will be to meticulously plan, design, and execute tests in close collaboration with our delivery teams. This will involve gaining a deep understanding of project requirements and objectives, and ensuring QA is considered at the start of a project. Your expertise in test planning, design, and execution will be essential in ensuring that all functional and non-functional requirements are rigorously tested and validated. You will ensure quality in both data and services.


In addition to manual testing, the role requires skills in test automation. Depending on project requirements, you will be responsible for the development and maintenance of automated test scripts. This will entail selecting appropriate tools and implementing automation frameworks to enhance the efficiency and coverage of our testing processes.


You will play a key role in maintaining the quality of data, identifying and resolving data issues, and implementing data quality best practices. This exciting role will ensure that the transformation of IM’s reporting, analytics and advanced analytics, is built on a foundation of quality and confidence.


This role can be remote/hybrid but you will be required to attend the Sheffield office for a monthly anchor day with the wider Data team.


What You’ll Be Doing


  • Implementing the latest quality assurance best practices within the data engineering team.
  • Assisting with the creation and review of technical specifications and test plans.
  • Assisting with the creation of estimates of the complexity and amount of work involved in aspects of data engineering team deliverables.
  • Ensuring the quality outcome of both technology and Data products through automated and manual techniques.
  • Contributing within the wider engineering community to ensure knowledge and experiences are shared, as well as support evolution of the discipline itself.
  • Analysing data sets to identify inconsistencies, errors, and anomalies.
  • Developing and implementing data quality rules and standards to ensure data accuracy and consistency.
  • Conducting thorough data validation and verification processes to ensure the integrity and reliability of data.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to establish data governance policies, procedures, and standards. Ensuring compliance with data governance frameworks and regulations
  • Designing and executing data quality tests to validate data accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
  • Identifying defects and suggesting improvements to data capture and processing systems.
  • Creating and maintaining data quality documentation, including data dictionaries, data quality rules, and data lineage. Providing clear and concise documentation for reference and auditing purposes.
  • Investigating and resolving data quality issues, collaborating with data stakeholders to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Developing and maintaining data quality issue tracking systems.
  • Implementing data quality monitoring tools and processes to continuously assess the quality of data. Developing and reporting on key data quality metrics and indicators.
  • Conducting training sessions to educate data users and stakeholders on data quality best practices, tools, and techniques. Promoting a culture of data quality awareness and accountability



About You


  • Experience in Defect management, generating quality reports and driving resolutions.
  • Extensive knowledge of testing methodologies, including both manual and automated testing techniques.
  • Proven experience in conducting both functional and non-functional testing, including performance, security, APIs, and usability testing.
  • Experience in data development methodologies.
  • Experience testing the data outcomes for data products.
  • Experience with automated testing approaches.
  • Strong Communication skills
  • Proficient with SQL and demonstrably deep understanding of SQL and analytical data warehouses/ lakehouse, ability to understand and create SQL.
  • Hands-on experience testing and ensuring quality ETL (or ELT) best practices at scale.
  • Hands-on experience testing with data pipeline tools (Azure Data Factory, Databricks).
  • Constantly improve product quality, security, and performance.
  • Desire to continually keep up with advancements in data engineering practices.
  • Proficiency in using industry-standard testing tools, such as Azure Dev Ops Test Plans.
  • Experience in creating comprehensive test plans, test cases, and test scripts across complex integrated systems to ensure thorough test coverage.
  • Ability to lead and mentor junior test analysts, providing guidance and support throughout the testing process.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively interact with cross-functional teams, including engineers, business analysts, project managers and product owners.
  • Ideally you will be from a Professional Services Background, but this isn’t essential.
