Other Conditions: Position is a temporary casual hire position and offers no benefits, hours not to exceed 19.75 hours per week.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists with all aspects of NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Program, including student recruitment and development, on court coaching, contest scheduling, compliance with NCAA, Conference and University of Hawaii rules and regulations, student-athlete academic achievement, and other duties assigned by the Head Coach. Additionally, the incumbent must maintain collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the department, other college offices, and appropriate relationships with members of the media, donors, and other individuals interested in the sports program.
- Assists and participates in practices and intercollegiate competitions. Teach necessary skills from the basic fundamentals to the techniques and strategies of play.
- Promotes and fosters a positive team environment, appropriate behavior, and sportsmanship by team members. Responsible for the conduct of team members both on and off the court.
- Promotes and maintains an environment where the physical, mental, social and academic well-being of all student-athletes are a priority.
- Assists with evaluating, recruiting and selecting qualified prospects who have the ability to compete in the classroom and athletically. Actively seeks and encourages a diverse group of prospects and assist them through the application process. Works collaboratively with the staff in the Compliance, Student Affairs, and Academics Office to qualify and process prospects in a timely and efficient manner. Makes recurring contacts by telephone, written correspondence, off-campus visits and evaluations, and coordination of campus visits as assigned by the Head Coach.
- Assists with overseeing the academic progress and success of student-athletes including promoting and maintaining an environment that encourages academic achievement as measured by academic eligibility, retention, and graduation.
- Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information, files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess, in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies.
- Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act.
- Actively participates in fundraising, promotional, and public relation activities for the sports program.
- Knows, recognizes and complies with the laws, policies, rules and regulations governing the University of Hawai‘i and its employees, and the rules of the NCAA and affiliated conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future. Immediately advises the Director of Athletics or designee if there is reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees, students, or others, have occurred or will occur.
- Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.
- Knowledge of tennis as competed at the collegiate level.
- Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range of problems that may commonly occur in a tennis program.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays and travel.
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds.
- Valid driver’s license.
- First Aid, CPR and AED certification.
- Computer, cell phone, and social media technology competency.
- Ability to analyze data, compile statistics, and apply quantitative methods to support program planning, evaluation, and reporting.
- Proficiency with software tools relevant to data management and statistical analysis (e.g., Excel, R, Python, or other applicable programs).
- Or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Tennis coaching experience at the collegiate level.
- Ability to understand and work effectively in Hawai'i's multi-cultural society.
