Duties and Responsibilities
- **Conduct landscape architecture applied research related to ecological urban designs, plans and solutions to highly complex and technical issues in the context of University of Hawaii Community Design Center (UHCDC) work.
- ** Perform research in landscape architectural analysis, modeling, and generation of proof-of-concept designs.
- ** Manage and implement project goals and objectives in collaboration with Principal Investigator (PI).
- ** Synthesize and present results including project information, existing literature/reports, planning documents, regulatory requirements, precedents, and existing site conditions at various scales.
- ** Develop research results summaries, masterplan and project proposals, concepts, programs, design, graphics, and documentation in collaboration with PI.
- ** Define and develop projects, supporting research teams, and conducting applied design research projects.
- ** Work with PI and private/public partners to apply research outcomes to real world systems.
- ** Determine and recommend urban design and landscape architectural technical solutions for practical development programs.
- ** Participate in and lead technical activities at workshops, community group and stakeholder gatherings, etc.
- ** Write, proofread, edit and/or assist in the writing of research and project reports. Support the dissemination of project findings.
- ** Assist the PI in integrating the UHCDC applied research and project work with the academic mission and curriculum of the School of Architecture.
- ** Directly support activities to enable technical landscape architecture work and the study and activities of undergraduate/graduate student assistants. Coordinate daily assignments and work products.
- ** Conduct literature, policy, data, plan, document research reviews, and library/archives searches.
- ** Keep abreast of landscape architectural trends, products, and systems.
- Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree in landscape architecture, architecture, urban planning or related fields of study and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for urban design and/or landscape architecture research and/or practicing landscape architecture; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
- Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the field of community design as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
- Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with community design and development.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
- If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
Supplemental Minimum Qualifications
- Proven evidence of completing highly contextual and inventive design and planning projects that demonstrate the ability to apply innovation.
- Proven ability to maintain high research and professional standards.
- Proven ability to independently interpret data and spatial design information.
- Proficiency in urban landscape design, research, and graphic abilities.
- Experience developing research, analysis and design documents and writing reports.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals and present to a variety of audiences.
- Proficiency in discipline-relevant digital software applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud (including Illustrator), GIS, CAD/Revit, Rhinoceros, and Sketchup.
- Experience with physical model modelmaking (using analog and digital tools).
Desirable Qualifications
- Masters degree in Landscape Architecture.
- Demonstrated ability to lead design outreach, education, and advocacy initiatives, for example through service to professional organizations or community design work.
- Ability to advance the landscape architecture discipline as evidenced, for example, in peer-recognized designs, awards, or publications.
