Overview
The M365 Enterprise Search team is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to help build and operate the search engine that powers Microsoft 365 Copilot. Our platform enables fast, reliable retrieval and delivers the grounding data that fuels Copilot experiences across the entire Microsoft 365 ecosystem.
We design and implement core components of a high‑scale, distributed search system that operates at true global scale. Our mission is to deliver enterprise‑grade search across documents, email, calendar events, contacts, and connectors with high precision and low latency, meeting the demands of the AI era.

Responsibilities

Build Enterprise Search and platform capabilities using cutting‑edge AI models.

Partner with Quality and Platform teams to deliver a highly scalable, high‑performance search stack.

Work closely with internal and external partners to translate requirements into rich search experiences.

Operate and maintain live‑site services for Enterprise Search.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
-
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

OR equivalent experience.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Background Check : This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:

Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

OR equivalent experience.

Demonstrated problem solving and debugging skills.

4+ years of experience in distributed systems and agile development environment.

Communications and cross-group collaboration skills which facilitate interactions across.

4+ years of C++/C#/Java/Rust software engineering and product development experience.
Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
