Our products can be found everywhere…including lifesaving medical devices, artificial intelligence, and missions to Mars!
The company’s strategic vision is to deliver technological breakthroughs where none currently exist. Established in 1959 and located in Farmington, Connecticut (90 miles from NYC and Boston), the company has doubled in size over the last 5 years. Mott is poised for significant expansion over the next 5 years.
The Process Engineer in the Rapid Prototype Cell is a pivotal role responsible for the accelerated development and execution of new manufacturing processes and product concepts, specifically leveraging expertise in Powder Metallurgy (PM) and Press Technology. This role requires a hands-on engineer capable of rapidly translating designs into functional prototypes under tight deadlines. Success hinges on a balance of deep technical mastery, exceptional attention to detail, a relentless problem-solving mentality, and the ability to thrive in a high-pressure work environment while maintaining a steadfast focus on quality and safety. This Engineer must demonstrate ownership over prototyping projects from concept to validation.
Key Responsibilities
Prototype Execution & Process Development
- Design and execute rapid prototyping trials using various PM and press technologies, ensuring adherence to design specifications and performance requirements.
- Optimize pressing parameters (e.g., compaction pressure, dwell time, tool setup) and material preparation (powder mixing, blending) for successful prototype fabrication.
- Analyze prototype results, including dimensional checks, density measurements, and mechanical testing, swiftly troubleshooting and adjusting processes to meet target specifications.
- Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of all tooling configurations, process variables, and experimental results for knowledge transfer.
- Powder modification including but not limited to particle size distribution, lubrication needs, etc. to meet desired product properties and scalability requirements.
Collaboration & Teamwork
- Collaborate effectively with other departments (Design, Production, Quality, R&D and Process Engineering) to ensure prototype processes are aligned with long-term manufacturability goals and quality standards.
- Act as a technical lead/subject matter expert, actively participating in cross-functional teamwork sessions to improve existing processes and onboard new technologies.
- Clearly communicate project statuses, technical challenges, and proposed solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Flexibility & Ownership
- Demonstrate flexibility in work prioritization to quickly adapt to shifting demands and critical project needs within the rapid prototyping schedule.
- Take full ownership of assigned prototype projects, driving them to completion and providing proactive status updates.
Required Technical Skills & Qualifications
- Educational Background: Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Engineering (Mechanical, Materials Science, or equivalent technical field).
- Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing or R&D environment.
- Core Expertise: Proven, in-depth technical expertise in Powder Metallurgy (PM) processes (e.g., compaction, sintering, material science) and operation/setup of Press Technology (mechanical or hydraulic presses, tooling design/maintenance).
- Tooling: Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, including GD&T, and experience with prototype tooling design and modification.
Desired Personal Attributes
The successful candidate will possess a specific set of characteristics critical for success in a fast-paced development environment:
- Inquisitive Mindset: Highly inquisitive and naturally curious, always seeking the "why" behind process behaviors and material responses.
- Adaptability: Profoundly willing to learn and adapt to new materials, equipment, and processing methods quickly and efficiently.
- Detail-Oriented: Possesses exceptional attention to detail to ensure precise process control and accurate data collection—critical for reproducible prototyping.
- Safety Focus: Highly safety-minded, rigorously adhering to all protocols and ensuring safe operation of high-pressure press equipment and material handling.
- Team Player: Demonstrates strong skills in teamwork and collaboration, viewing cross-functional interaction as key to project success.
- Resilience: Capable of maintaining performance and clarity in a high-pressure work environment with concurrent projects and urgent deadlines.
- Ownership: Exhibits a high degree of accountability and the ability to take full ownership of problems until they are resolved.
