General Definition of Work

The homebound teacher, under moderate supervision, performs instructional work with limited decision-making discretion providing leadership in the educational environment that encourages and nurtures learning for all students. The teacher supervises, monitors, and evaluates students while developing lesson plans to ensure all student needs are met. Employee performs district-level work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the executive director of exceptional children.

Salary/Status

Certified Schedule/ Full-time, 10 months

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

 

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Adhere to the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards
  • Plan and implement a program of study in the assigned content area that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of assigned students
  • Provide direct educational instruction to students who are hospitalized or homebound for periods of time and are unable to attend school
  • Consult with teachers and school staff about assignments and special circumstances; implement instructional activities provided by student’s teacher of record including any modifications/accommodations designed in the homebound instructional plan
  • Implement lesson plans to assure continuity of instruction between the classroom and home
  • Provide a learning environment that meets the individual needs of students with diverse learning styles and special needs
  • Facilitate student access to technology as appropriate and use technology in the learning process
  • Maintain accurate records in accordance with federal, state and local policies.
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, standards, and expectations of curriculum in assigned area
  • Comprehensive knowledge of how to utilize appropriate data and information to make instructional decisions for students
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of various learning styles, curriculum development and program evaluation, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning
  • Knowledge of special education instructional strategies with students at multiple grade levels and cognitive levels
  • Knowledge of current laws and regulations pertaining to students with disabilities
  • Knowledge of child development and characteristics of all fourteen eligibility categories identified in North Carolina as areas of disability
  • Skilled in communication, both verbal and written
  • Skilled in computers and software including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment, or software related to instructional practice and business needs
  • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums
  • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgement
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment

 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Three (3) years of experience teaching students required
  • Valid NC Teaching license in assigned area - EC License
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
