Position Summary: 

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Registered Dietitian (RD) to join our Health and Nutrition Services (HNS) team. This role supports five clusters, encompassing 40 centers and approximately 2,300 children and families. The RD will play a vital role in implementing comprehensive nutrition services, including special diet implementation and oversight, nutrition education, and individualized nutrition counseling. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and manage special diet menus and individual accommodations, including procurement and delivery of specialized food items. 

  • Provide nutrition education and counseling to families, promoting healthy eating habits and lifelong wellness. 

  • Collaborate with community partners, healthcare providers, and families to support positive health outcomes. 

  • Ensure compliance with regulations from the Office of Head Start (OHS), Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS), and other relevant agencies. 

  • Contribute to the creation and implementation of research-based policies and procedures that support culturally relevant health and nutrition practices.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree from a recognized educational institute in the field of Nutrition or Dietetics or agreed equivalent that supports high quality implementation of our program as determined by the agency. 

  • Ability to register with the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as a Registered Dietitian/Registered Dietitian Nutritionist within one year of hire. 

  • A minimum of five (5) years documented experience in community health and/or nutrition as a nutritionist or dietitian, including services for children 0-5 years of age. 

  • Must be able to perform mathematical calculations, including percentages. 

  • Read, write, speak and understand English. 

  • Submit a current AZ Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card prior to start date. 

  • Able to pass a criminal background check. 

  • Possess a valid Arizona driver's license and excellent driving record. 

  

Other Requirements (post hire):

  • Must be able to travel to and from various sites as needed. 

  • Provide proof of immunizations: MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Tdap (adult Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis), and a clear Tuberculosis self-assessment. 

  • Able to pass a company paid physical exam prior to starting work. 

  • Must be able to prove the right to work in the USA by providing appropriate documents to complete the Federal I-9 form.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Possess a master’s degree from a recognized educational institute in the field of Health Science, Nutrition, or Public Health or higher education or agreed equivalent that supports high quality implementation of our program as determined by the agency. 
  • Current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as a Registered Dietitian/Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. 

  • Certified Lactation Counselor [CLC] or other lactation education/support credential 

  • Read, write, speak, and understand Spanish.

Physical Requirements:

Duties and Responsibilities


Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities: 

Direct Services and Nutrition Education: 

  • Review and enhance general menus to ensure high nutritional quality. 

  • Develop and implement Special Diet Menus in collaboration with the Food Service team. 

  • Prepare templates and procure products for dietary modifications. 

  • Support Health and Nutrition Coordinators (HNCs) with individual dietary accommodation plans. 

  • Assess nutritional risk factors and consult with families and center teams. 

  • Provide breastfeeding and lactation counseling. 

  • Assist families in accessing community nutrition resources. 

  • Lead the development of a consistent, agency-wide Nutrition Education Program. 

  • Conduct nutrition workshops and create educational materials for families. 

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive nutrition assessment tool. 

  • Provide nutrition training for program staff. 

  • Promote classroom and home-based nutrition activities, including gardening and movement programs. 

  

Supervision: 

  • Identify self-growth, development goals, and strategies for achievement with support and input from supervisor. 

  • Commit and participate in consistent and planned meetings with supervisor to further professional growth by seeking feedback, reflecting on and assessing own practice, and taking advantage of opportunities to improve skills and knowledge. 

  

Recordkeeping, Monitoring, and Reporting:

  • Monitor implementation of Special Diets and Nutrition Education Programs. 

  • Maintain accurate participant data and documentation. 

  • Track growth assessments and ensure compliance with standards. 

  • Analyze trends in nutrition and food service data; recommend improvements. 

  • Maintain updated community resource information. 

  • Ensure compliance with OHS Performance Standards, ADHS regulations, and other applicable requirements. 

  

Leadership, Management, and Teamwork: 

  • Participate in strategic planning, budgeting, governance, and agency self-assessment within the HNS team. 

  • Collaborate across departments to support integrated service delivery through the Comprehensive Services Unit. 

  • Maintain nutrition policies and procedures and ensure fidelity to CPC’s Nutrition Philosophy and current best practices. 

  • Build and maintain relationships with community partners and advisory committees. 

  • Advocate for the nutritional needs of Head Start children and families. 

  • Provide training on nutrition topics and systems (e.g., ChildPlus) to staff across departments. 

  • Coordinate interdisciplinary training using adult learning strategies.
