The Grant and Contract Administrator III – Synthetic Organofluorine Compounds Liaison supports faculty and researchers at the University of Maine by providing expert guidance in preparing, submitting, and managing research proposals and awards focused on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and related compounds, as part of the University of Maine’s partnership with the USDA Agricultural Research Service’s Center of Excellence. This position ensures compliance with federal, state, and sponsor regulations, assists with complex budgets and proposal submissions, and manages awards from a wide range of funding agencies. The role serves as a key resource throughout the grant lifecycle—offering support with budgeting, reporting, amendments, and closeout processes. The Liaison also coordinates with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate the smooth administration of funded research. This position plays a vital role in advancing the University’s research agenda and its impact on environmental and public health. Typical hiring range for this soft-money funded position is $60,000 to $70,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications:
Required:

  • A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • A minimum of five years of directly related experience. 
  • Knowledge of federal regulations such as Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Award (2 CFR 200), Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR’s), Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), and federal agency specific guidelines. 
  • Ability to analyze complex situations, identify workable solutions, and effectively balance service with regulatory compliance.
  • Strong customer service orientation and demonstrated experience fostering trust and positive relationships with faculty and staff. 
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgement and initiate and manage multiple awards that have deadlines for review and execution. 

Preferred:

  • Understanding of relevant university policies and procedures for seeking, acquiring, and managing extramural funds.
  • Familiarity with grant and financial related computer applications such as PeopleSoft and federal grant submission portals such as grants.gov and research.gov. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and proficiency with Adobe and Microsoft Office including Word, Access, Excel. 
  • Proven ability to function effectively as a member of a team in a high-stressed office environment. 
  • Demonstrated experience preparing and submitting proposals to federal or other external sponsors, including familiarity with institutional and sponsor-specific submission platforms and procedures.
