ABOUT DC THOMSON

At DC Thomson, we are a business with a purpose – to make a positive impact on the communities we serve.

We are home to some of the world’s best-loved media brands, organised around local news and radio, companionship, kids, advocacy, energy, puzzles and hobbies.

The Courier, The Press & Journal, The Sunday Post, Beano, Stylist, Puzzler, The People’s Friend, My Weekly, bunkered, Energy Voice, Findmypast and Brightsolid are just some of the brands you might know us for.

Deeply rooted in our communities, we are investing in data, technology and talent to unlock a new level of understanding about what really matters to our customers. This is how we are shaping the future of media.

We’ve changed the way we work to create a flexible, collaborative, learning-led culture that draws on expertise from across the organisation to create award-winning content and cultural moments that make audiences want to be part of our communities.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re looking for a Photographer/Videographer who can capture the moments our audiences care about and turn them into compelling visual stories that drive engagement and subscription value.

Working out of our Inverness office but coving across the Highlands, you’ll shoot, edit and file quickly from the field and the newsroom; write accurate captions; and work closely with our AV desk and editors to get assets live in the best format for web, app and social (including vertical and short-form). You’ll help plan visual series and galleries, uphold legal and ethical standards, and use performance insights to keep improving our output.

This role is central to strengthening visual identity across our news brands and platforms.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create high-quality stills, video and short social formats to deadline
  • Publish quickly with complete IPTC metadata, accurate captions
  • Collaborate with the AV desk and editors to select, refine and publish galleries, clips and packages
  • Plan photo stories and recurring visual series aligned to subscription and engagement goals
  • File remotely from location using mobile/remote workflows; maintain EXIF/IPTC integrity
  • Uphold standards: Editors’ Code/IPSO, privacy/consent (especially for children/vulnerable people), accessibility and brand consistency across print, web and social
  • Use data (e.g. gallery opens, subscriber views, completion rates) to inform future coverage
  • Share know-how and support colleagues with basic visual skills when needed
  • Care for kit and follow safety/risk protocols on assignment

Requirements

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

  • A strong portfolio showing news/features photography, short-form video and clear visual storytelling
  • Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom/Premiere (or equivalent); familiarity with Photo Mechanic/Bridge
  • Confident mobile/on-the-go capture and filing
  • Calm, fast decision-making under pressure and excellent communication with desk and editors
  • Understanding of newsroom operations and live publishing
  • Working knowledge of media law/ethics (Editors’ Code/IPSO), privacy/GDPR, captioning standards
  • Flexibility for early/late shifts, weekends and breaking news
  • Full UK driving licence

It’s a bonus if you have:

  • Experience planning recurring photo series/high-performing galleries
  • Comfort using analytics to guide commissioning and treatment

To apply for this role, please follow our online application process and submit a CV and cover letter.
