SUMMARY

This position is part of the Storm Water Services Communications Team and is primarily responsible for successful implementation of external and internal communications that support Storm Water Services’ mission and strategic priorities.

Salary Range Offering: $66,525.30 - $73,916.99 Commensurate with Experience

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute diverse public information and outreach initiatives aligned with organizational goals.
  • Assist with social media operations, including planning, posting, monitoring, and responding, in collaboration with the Communications Team.
  • Provide social media support for events and initiatives, ensuring timely and strategic engagement.
  • Craft clear, compelling written content for various audiences.
  • Create on-brand content including copy, graphics and short-form videos using creative storytelling techniques.
  • Analyze and report performance metrics to guide strategy and enhance content effectiveness.
  • Assist with community engagement efforts, including set up, execution and breakdown of events.
  • Contribute to inclusive communication efforts, including multilingual and accessible communications.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Perform and excel within an integrated fast-paced team environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build relationships.
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent writing, storytelling, and editing skills and proficient in AP style.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical information to various audiences.
  • Demonstrated content creation for digital media platforms, including photography and videography.
  • On-camera and public speaking skills.
  • Skills in MS Office, Sprout Social, Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Willing to work during evenings/weekends as needed.
  • Successful candidate must have a valid driver's license and ability to receive and maintain a City Driving Permit.

 Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations/public affairs or related field.
  • Media relations and digital communications experience preferred.
  • Background in stormwater, water resources, natural resources, environmental science and/or government, non-profit experience a plus.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma with 5 years of relevant experience

OR

  • Associate's degree with 3 years of relevant experience

OR

  • Bachelor's degree with 1 year of relevant experience

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
